i just got this message during --update
Code:
!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- net-im/skype-4.3.0.37-r6::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/media/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Raymond Jennings <shentino@gmail.com> (11 Jun 2017)
# Upstream announced EOL effective July 2017.
# Depends on qt4 which is being deprecated.
# Possible alternative is skypeforlinux,
# which uses the same account information but has different features.

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

i can understand qt4 is being deprecated, and skype being dependant on it becoming potentially deprecated too.
however, the possible alternative is skypeforlinux recommended on x86 8O
Code:
$ emerge -pv skypeforlinux

These are the packages that would be merged:

Calculating dependencies \

!!! Problem resolving dependencies for net-im/skypeforlinux
... done!

!!! The ebuild selected to satisfy "skypeforlinux" has unmet requirements.
- net-im/skypeforlinux-5.3.0.1::gentoo USE="-pax_kernel"

The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
    abi_x86_64

The above constraints are a subset of the following complete expression:
    any-of ( abi_x86_64 )

It's not a qt4 problem, but

I'm not sure but I think the only solution for 32bit (if work) is skype on web.

call button is greyed out, and mouse becomes a stop sign :( text messaging seems to work

guess i need to find alternatives, and tell everyone else to use those instead.

Regular net-im/skype works for now (but microsoft will be EOLing it soon apparently).

My advice is to manually unmask it if you want it, or just use https://web.skype.com to use the web version.

Personally I'd rather use discord

As the old Skype for Linux (net-im/skype-4.3.*) will stop working on 1st July 2017, a couple of days ago I uninstalled it and installed the new Skype for Linux 5.3 Beta (net-im/skypeforlinux-5.3.0.1). The latter is only 64-bit, by the way, as Microsoft has decided not to release a 32-bit version.

Anyway, I have already had to use it for many hours (Skype-to-Skype, Skype-to-landline and Skype-to-mobile) and the new version works well for me, including one-to-one video calls, although occasionally video stopped streaming and I had to turn it off and on again. The 5.3.0.1 Beta does not support Screen Sharing, which is something I used occasionally in the old version. Hopefully Microsoft will be adding that function in one of the next updates.

I find the UI of the new version less intuitive than the old version. Although the new UI looks very contemporary, I find it less ergonomic.

Most of the former Skype users I know moved on to other things a while ago: Google Hangouts/Voice, Discord, Telegram etc.

They're all equally bad — Electron's bloat really levels the playing field (and the stadium and surrounding town) — but that might paradoxically make it easier to convince others to move away from Skype.

Are there still people running a 32 bit OS in 2017?

Which browser did you try? Also, did you disable all ad/malware blocker add-ons in the browser? Admittedly I only tried it in a 64-bit installation, but Skype for Web works for me in Google Chrome with no ad/malware blocker add-ons enabled.

firefox on gentoo x86 :(
i tried it just now on a clean profile with no addons/plugins. both video call and call buttons are disabled, and mouse turns into a stop sign over them. messages are sent/received.

qupzilla on gentoo x86 :)
i tried it just now on a clean profile with no addons/plugins. call button is enabled, and i can make calls :D video call button is disabled, probably due to my webcam problem.
i tried it again on my default profile with usual plugins, and works as above :)

thank you for the prompt. i now have something to fallback on. i have now stopped using chromium, too much bloat. firefox seems to be going that way too.

Good to know you can use Skype again.

I've noticed that Firefox for Linux has trouble with certain Web sites that are not a problem for Google Chrome (I don't use Chromium) in Linux and Firefox in Windows. So it's not just bloat in Firefox; I think it has other issues. So I normally use Firefox as my main browser and fallback to Chrome if Firefox cannot handle a particular Web site.

As mentioned by Ant P., the new Skype for Linux application uses Electron, so, if it's any consolation to you, Skype for Web looks and feels identical to the new Skype for Linux application. I.e. you are not missing anything by not being able to install net-im/skypeforlinux in your 32-bit Gentoo installation.

bane of this new world.. total bloat! devs using bloatware apps to create even more bloatware apps

ah i guess that is definitely a consolation :) probably more consolation to get rid of bloatware/dependencies

Oh man, that sucks! Oh well, I've been thinking of moving to something else for a while so I guess it's high time now. So it's yet another app that Microsoft takes over and consequently turns to sh*t :(

A lot of applications these days are going the Electron route, Discord is the same way.

I mean, I can't say I'm happy about some buzzword-laden web platform that isn't the same C that we've used for ~45 years, but if they can decide on one standard and stick with it, then I guess I can grow to live with electron.

Look at Spotify, they use something called Chromium Embedded Framework, which basically works the same way as Electron. Whether CEF is better than Electron, I don't know. I'd rather not use javascript at all personally but it is what it is. :?

We have a daughter out-of-state, our main reason for Skype. When all of this thrashing about was happening, we moved to HangOuts, and had better luck than we ever did with Skype. Not perfect, but a lot better.

Good to hear that the Google one worked out better for you. In my case, it didn't — massive performance issues with Google's in-browser plugin. That happens to be the major reason why I am using Skype. Seeing as I moved several years ago, perhaps things have improved?

Meanwhile, one alternative could have been video chat over XMPP, but psimedia was removed from the tree recently.

I've used "google-chrome-stable" when doing video chats with HangOuts - if that makes a difference. At one point I'd installed the firefox plugin, but that seemed to get stale fast. I normally use firefox, but for our video chats I stay inside the Google ecosystem.

net-im/skype-4.3.0.37 is now logged out automatically upon login. In what appears to be a brilliant UI design, this closes skype and it does not print any message, in the GUI or in stdio/stderr, explaining the reason behind this.

Microsoft seems to be doing this on the server side, solely based on the reported version number. But there is a workaround to log in with 4.3.0.37.

I don't have skype installed on Gentoo anywhere, because I don't want that crap on anything I actually care about.

That said, there's a skype binary installer as a deb or rpm package. It's a monolithic binary. It actually works pretty good, I have it on Ubuntu 16.04 and I know a couple other guys who I think are on 15.xx or 16.10 *buntu. It even does multiuser desktop sharing, which has never happened to me before.

Actually I'm curious about things that work well on all platforms which also support group desktop sharing.
