...basically just doesn't work anymore. It's impossible to install from it, since even portage doesn't work any longer and can't update itself. It should probably just be removed from the download page.

Which is rather unfortunate. I'd much rather have a 64bit userland.

They might reject it for lack of any logs, but I did file it.

Thanks for the info downsj!

Was thinking about trying out ppc64/64bit ul too on my G5. ppc64/32bit ul is running fine though. I did an install from this iso about 3 month ago. I wonder how big the difference will be compared to a 64bit ul install,

I'd just like to have a 64bit userland. There doesn't seem like there's much point to having a 32bit one, since it's not like there are existing 32bit PPC binaries I want to run, and so many modern things break in 32bit because of PPC relocation limits.

http://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/ppc/autobuilds/current-stage3-ppc64/ appears to be a 64bit userland. Yay.

The compiler in the latest stage3 can't build binutils without seg faulting. Trying to build gcc-5.4.0 now.

And that's a nope on building gcc-5.4.0 either.

Just like with the old 32bit stage3, the current 32bit stage3 compiler appears to work fine.

...and spoke too soon. gcc 4.9.4 is just broken in general.

Once again back to stage3-ppc64-32ul-20160316.tar.bz2, which includes gcc 4.9.3 instead of gcc 4.9.4.

The bootstrap has made it through the initial build of gcc 5.4.0, so it's looking like it will (once again) work just fine.

This little odyssey certainly wasted a lot of time.

Summary: neither the 32bit or 64bit latest stage3 builds for ppc64 have working compilers.

Well, after a very long while I got the 32bit system bootstrapped from the 2016 stage3 to eventually suffer a segfault during an emerge -e system.

Even though I've beat the crap out of this system in other OSes, there is something about it that is unhappy running Linux. I think I'll let it sit for a while and then drop it down to a single 1GB stick of RAM, see if the behavior changes.

Just to close out the thread, with the bad DIMM removed the 64bit userland from 20170322 works just fine.

Lesson here is to never underestimate the power of hardware suddenly going bad.
