Success!

I still need to boot with the USB-C hub plugged for the ethernet adapter to detect/initialise but that's for another day.

I now have a system completing an emerge --sync from a root console so I am ready to continue with the handbook!

Thanks for all the patience and hints and care in providing feedback and assistance guys! Very much appreciated.
Feels good to be back at the Gentoo coal face after so long.
