I'm pretty sure i did everything right, but i'm starting to suspect it's the mirrors I selected--I chose the ones in Rochester New York, since it was closer to Jersey.

I really don't want to torch this and start over.

Use the global round robin server distfiles.gentoo.org to make sure your setup is OK at least, don't worry about the mirror for now - system update internet traffic is only a drop in the bucket compared to all those netflix packets...

That round robin link is found here, right?
Code:
root #mirrorselect -i -r -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/portage/make.conf

Or do I drop the -r and add this along with the Rochester mirrors?

Just prepend GENTOO_MIRRORS="" to your emerge -uvDNa @world.

Starrcade,

Code:
Resolving gentoo.osuosl.org... failed: Temporary failure in name resolution.
wget: unable to resolve host address ‘gentoo.osuosl.org’

Your /etc/resolv.conf file does not have any nameservers, or its missing entirely.

I'll see if the handbook has something about that, do I just cram that in the Make.conf?

Would it work to repeat the resolv.conf step in the handbook, or can I change this myself?
Maybe you can show me an example of yours?

No, just concatenate:
Code:
# GENTOO_MIRRORS=""   emerge -uvDNa @world

Regarding you main question:
Skip the optional mirrorselect step. It can be done any time later.
Reboot sysresccd, check your network connection and startover from Copy DNS info.

/etc/resolv.conf basically tells the system which nameserver(s) to use:

ie. for using Google's public dns-servers

/etc/resolv.conf
Code:
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

Starrcade,

You copy the /etc/resolv.conf from outside the chroot to inside the chroot.

When you dhcp lease is renewed, its normally renewed unchanged.
In rare instances the details will change.
Lease is renewal happens outside the chroot and is not copied in. In the rase instances where things change, it can break your internet connection from inside the chroot.

Using Google's public namservers will get you going for the install or you can do the cp /etc/resolv.conf from the handbook again.

Oh my fucking god it worked. 8O

/etc/resolv.conf only had 192.168.1.1 as a nameserver
I went copied the resolv.conf anyway, chrooted, and then added the IP addresses and it works o-o

Thank you so much!

Is 192.168.1.1 the IP address of your internet router ? If so, that router should provide a DNS resolver (a proxy/cache). Perhaps this DNS resolver uses restricted DNS servers (most of the time, your ISP ones) as its reference.
I suppose this router also provides DHCP, and your Gentoo box gets its IP address, and its DNS configuration, via a DHCP client. Then, your resolv.conf tuning will be erased the next time you will reboot your station.
