I was trying to update a kernel earlier today and got this error message while running efibootmgr.

My /sys/firmware/efi/efivars/ looks pretty empty (there were a few pstore panic logs a month or two ago, but I cleaned those out). It turns out that removing boot entries to make space was a dumb idea, and now I can't boot anything but the default hardcoded bootx64.efi.

The BIOS screen is also dead; I can't save settings because it freezes up. I can't reset to defaults in it either. Am going to be crawling behind my desk to disassemble it and see if there's a clear jumper next, but I'm not sure even that'll help.

Anyone have any ideas what to do here? I have a bad feeling the EEPROM is dead and the board with it.

Okay, I flipped the cmos jumper and it only reset the internal clock, so I suspected it didn't help. I've just managed to install rEFInd without the same error coming up though, and efibootmgr seems to be functioning, so now I don't have any idea what to believe... not marking this solved just yet.

some m/b maker have a tiny "bios update" program next to the real bios, and if you brick your bios, you could use this update my bios procedure to restore a valid one.
i think most (all?) uefi bios m/b should have that "bios update" system.

you should look at your m/b manual to see what keys you need to start that program, and you could upgrade/restore your bios
