Every thing almost works and it only took half a dozen compiles. :lol:

The first problem is the framebuffer (nice totally balck screen), but that isn't my question, since it is disabled for now.

As I watch the system booting up, I see remnants of what I recognize - and extra stuff thrown in. For example, one line looks like
Code:

* InitialisalasALSA  .... [
                           [ok]

In other words, random characters are just thrown in. I seem to remember somthing similar happening when I upgraded the kernel under my last version of Mandrake. Dmesg looks just fine.

What would fix this?

Note: got framebuffer working, and it doesn't have the problem. Still, why would the random characters pop up?

now, let me guess, have you by any chance forgotten to run lilo or grub after a kernel compile?

What, I need to do more than edit grub.conf?

Yes, I did the root and setup commands (again). No difference.
