Hey,

I've encountered some zip archives with unicode filenames (german). I can unzip them properly on debian based and fedora systems, but not on my beloved gentoo systems.

First of all my locale settings:

Code:
LANG=de_DE.utf8
LC_CTYPE="de_DE.utf8"
LC_NUMERIC="de_DE.utf8"
LC_TIME="de_DE.utf8"
LC_COLLATE="de_DE.utf8"
LC_MONETARY="de_DE.utf8"
LC_MESSAGES="de_DE.utf8"
LC_PAPER="de_DE.utf8"
LC_NAME="de_DE.utf8"
LC_ADDRESS="de_DE.utf8"
LC_TELEPHONE="de_DE.utf8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="de_DE.utf8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="de_DE.utf8"
LC_ALL=

Did I've made a config error somewhere or do we miss some patches in app-arch/unzip other distributions have included?

1) LC_ALL= looks wrong. Unset it! You don't need it, since you already set the more specific LC-variables. If you really want to set it, set it to "de_DE.utf8", but not to the empty string - this causes exactly the problem you see: filenames are interpreted as ASCII text and not as Unicode.
2) Please verify that unzip was installed with USE flag 'unicode'

I'm not even sure where the empty LC_ALL is injected. I've just used eselect locale to select "de_DE.utf8". And a find & grep on my /etc directory don't really give me a hint where to look after.

When you call man locale, you'll see, that LC_ALL is also empty but set in the example section.

Yes, it is!

That's ok, also according to Localization Guide and UTF-8.

Here it works

If locale settings are correct and if you compiled unzip with USE flag 'unicode', then maybe the filename in the zip file is faulty.

Here is what I get when I create a file 'Außendienst', pack it into a zip file and then look at the zip file:

Code:
unzip -v test.zip
Archive:  test.zip
 Length   Method    Size  Cmpr    Date    Time   CRC-32   Name
--------  ------  ------- ---- ---------- ----- --------  ----
       0  Stored        0   0% 08-31-2017 09:54 00000000  Au??endienst
--------          -------  ---                            -------
       0                0   0%                            1 file

7z l test.zip
...
   Date      Time    Attr         Size   Compressed  Name
------------------- ----- ------------ ------------  ------------------------
2017-08-31 09:54:47 .....            0            0  Außendienst
------------------- ----- ------------ ------------  ------------------------
2017-08-31 09:54:47                  0            0  1 files

What do 'unzip -v' and '7z l' show for your zip file? The same as above? Or Außendienst?

Another possibility: you would also see 'Außendienst' if you use PuTTY to connect to your Gentoo server, but PuTTY itself is configured to "Latin1". In this case, your ZIP file and your Gentoo server are configured correctly and the filename of the extraced file is OK, but your terminal has the wrong configuration. So you might want to check the configuration of your terminal.

Now I've digged somewhat deeper into the problem.

I've created a small testcase like you did. Here is the snippet I'm using:

Code:
stefan@scholle /tmp $ cat ziptest.sh
#!/bin/bash

touch Außendienst
zip -0 Außendienst.zip Außendienst
echo ""
python -c "import os;print repr(open('Außendienst.zip', 'rb').read())"
echo ""
unzip -v Außendienst.zip

now the output when running that testcase on my gentoo box:

Code:
updating: Außendienst (stored 0%)

'PK\x03\x04\n\x00\x00\x08\x00\x00\xac\x86"K\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x0c\x00\x1c\x00Au\xc3\x9fendienstUT\t\x00\x03\xe3\xc5\xaaY\xe3\xc5\xaaYux\x0b\x00\x01\x04\xe8\x03\x00\x00\x04\xe8\x03\x00\x00PK\x01\x02\x1e\x03\n\x00\x00\x08\x00\x00\xac\x86"K\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x0c\x00\x18\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\xa4\x81\x00\x00\x00\x00Au\xc3\x9fendienstUT\x05\x00\x03\xe3\xc5\xaaYux\x0b\x00\x01\x04\xe8\x03\x00\x00\x04\xe8\x03\x00\x00PK\x05\x06\x00\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x01\x00R\x00\x00\x00F\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00'

Archive:  Außendienst.zip

--------          -------  ---                            -------
       0                0   0%                            1 file

That looks promising. Now I'm going to copy the testsnipped to my ubuntu based kubernetes pod (google container engine)

Code:
kubectl cp ziptest.sh <thepodname>:/src/ziptest.sh

connecting to that pod:

Code:
kubectl exec -it <thepodname> -- /bin/bash

And running the same test remotely - the output:

Code:
updating: Außendienst (stored 0%)

'PK\x03\x04\n\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\xf0r"K\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x0c\x00\x1c\x00Au\xc3\x9fendienstUT\t\x00\x03\xe4\xbe\xaaY\xe4\xbe\xaaYux\x0b\x00\x01\x04\x00\x00\x00\x00\x04\x00\x00\x00\x00PK\x01\x02\x1e\x03\n\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\xf0r"K\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x0c\x00\x18\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\xa4\x81\x00\x00\x00\x00Au\xc3\x9fendienstUT\x05\x00\x03\xe4\xbe\xaaYux\x0b\x00\x01\x04\x00\x00\x00\x00\x04\x00\x00\x00\x00PK\x05\x06\x00\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x01\x00R\x00\x00\x00F\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00'

       0                0   0%                            1 file

Ok, also looks ok. Now I want to inspect the remote Außendienst.zip file on my gentoo box. using the python and the unzip cmd as above:

Code:

Btw, the output of the locale cmd on the ubunti pod looks exactly as on my gentoo box. I'm really confused what's going on there.

It seems, that my ubuntu system seems to use a different date formatting as my gentoo box. That could be a sign, that something is not configured properly on that side.

I'm trying to understand what are the differences to specify a utf8 suffix as in "de_DE.UTF-8" compared to "de_DE.utf8". The SUPPORTED file suggests to use the UTF-8 suffix - both on gentoo as on ubuntu. But when calling locale -a it will be displayed as "utf8" anyway. Mhm... strange

Try using p7zip instead (7z x file.zip).

Hey everyone,

good news. I've just managed to unzip correctly the testcase zipfile. After reading a lot of threads about ubuntu localization on docker containers, I've played (again) with DOCKERFILE ENV setting. Against the recommendation to set LANG, LANGUAGE and LC_ALL, now I'm only set LANG. Et voila, it works. I will incorporate the ziptest in my QA suite to be sure everything is in line in the feature.

Thank you all for your support and your time. I'm just a little concerned that I did not understand up until now, what exactly was going wrong in the interaction between the ubuntu container and my gentoo box. Perhaps cross-cultural misunderstandings ;)

Please consider this thread as solved.

For the record -U gives another wrong spelling. Staying with plain unzip cmd:

Code:
unzip -U Außendienst.zip
Archive:  Außendienst.zip
 extracting: Au#U00dfendienst

LC_ALL showing in the output of locale, does not mean it is set; to verify:
Code:
echo "LC_ALL is ${LC_ALL-unset}"
As the OP has found, you do not want it set in general; use LANG for the default, and LC_FOO (where FOO is not ALL) to override a specific category (LC_CTYPE is the most common.)
LC_ALL is meant to be for process-specific overrides, eg:
Code:
LC_ALL=C cmd ..
from shell.

Setting LC_ALL to any value (including empty), means no other setting will apply cf: man 7 locale
The default locale on process startup is always "C" (or equiv: "POSIX"), until it calls setlocale. cf: man 3p setlocale
