I had setup zabbix to monitor our company servers in lan and it worked fairly well. Now I have setup a hosted virtual private server and am thinking of implementing a monitoring solution for it. Is it possible, to setup zabbix on the vps to monitor itself ? How can I securely monitor this server, when it is not in my lan but in internet ? How can monitoring data be securely accessed? Is it secured by some sort of login / encryption ?

And how are you going to know that your monitoring died alongside with that server it was meant to monitor for you? External monitoring is unlikely to fail at the same time as monitored system. Monitoring hosted on the monitored system can fail due to a common cause, so your system is down and you don't get any notice.

Zabbix can work with SSL transport. I don't know the details, but I do know it supports it natively, so you can have an encrypted connection. I suppose you have to explicitly enable it though. And generate certificates. And they should be trusted, so you may consider setting your own local CA if you're going to have more than 3-4 servers monitored this way. |

ok, I see, that's cool to know anyways, but as you explained, I think I'll setup a dedicated Server for doing the monitoring. |
