Hello,

All of a sudden my touchpad stopped working and moreover, whenever I try to move the cursor it actually scrolls the window. I checked in xev and indeed, when I move one finger on it, a series of ButtonPress and ButtonRelease events are generated, instead of MotionNotify, as if I was tapping it.

Hi adrians, a good start to the diagnostic but having some more information would help. This is likely a driver issue since hardly anything in X configuration is actually likely to produce such a misguided attempt at the use of the hardware, I find that X works really good!! So you are right to have posted this in the kernel and hardware section. Do you have an emerge --info that you can post back with, or just look in make.conf and see what is the environment variable for INPUT_DEVICES like on your machine?

Since we don't know, I will wait to provide any concrete suggestions, but touchpads can have different drivers. If you are using libinput for example versus a say a proprietary driver for the touchpad that will change how you go about fixing the issue. That' all.

I did that. Here's what I'm getting when I swipe my finger over the touchpad
Code:

    state 0x0, button 4, same_screen YES

ButtonRelease event, serial 37, synthetic NO, window 0x1e00001,
    root 0xd5, subw 0x0, time 16991645, (408,484), root:(2436,1009),
    state 0x800, button 4, same_screen YES

as opposed to what it's supposed to happen, like when I'm using the mouse:
Code:

MotionNotify event, serial 37, synthetic NO, window 0x1e00001,
    root 0xd5, subw 0x0, time 16994326, (407,484), root:(2435,1009),

Please follow the items in this link https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Libinput

If xinput isnt it, then maybe i mispoke earlier and the Xorg configuration does seem important here.
