timidity++ assorted problems

Hi,

in the past I used timidity and it always worked fine. But now I returned to it after a couple of years, and I'm finding several problems.

I'll begin with the first and most obvious: when I play a midi file with timidity, it produces no sound. These are the details:

- "timidity file.mid" or "timidity -Os file.mid" is completely silent
- "timidity -Ow file.mid" produces a wave file that plays fine
- if I launch the server with "timidity -iA" I can play a midi file with "aplaymidi --port 128:0 file.mid", but the tempo is off and the sound is distorted, obviously due to underruns.

I guess I should mention that:

- I use alsa without any other layer or "server" like jack, pulseaudio or anything
- my USB card works perfectly fine with every other application.

Thanks for your answer, I also have that in /etc/conf.d/timidity.

I tried with different buffer settings and the results vary a little bit, but always with distortion due to underruns.

BTW, if I start the server from the command line, it works, but starting the rc-service doesn't work:
