Edit: Just a dumb (but educational) mistake. I never added dhcpcd to the openrc init services so after retstarting the network controllers were down by default.
Nor exactly an installation issue. I already have gentoo installed. I've never been able to get my intel wifi working, so I bought an ethernet cable and plugged it in. After rebuilding the kernel for supporting my ethernet controller and starting up the e1000e module, eth0 is visible but doesn't seem to work. When I ping 8.8.8.8 I get "error: Network unreachable". I remember that during the liveCD install I had less trouble with connecting to the internet, so I boot into the liveCD. Weirdly, ifconfig -a shows only lo, when the same command executed earlier had no trouble giving me eth0 and wlan0. Also, when I originally installed gentoo using the same USB drive, ethernet connection was plug-and-play-easy. out of the liveCD, lspci -k shows no working modules under the Intel Ethernet Controller so I modprobe e1000e and this doesn't change. dmesg doesn't show any errors for e1000e. I need to connect to the internet because at this point I'm starting to think that maybe my kernel sources are corrupted or something. Any ideas about what is going on here?

Are you certain that "e1000e" is the name of the correct driver?
What's the output when you run the command "lspci -v" as root?
Here's the relevant piece of my own with a working eth0:

Yeah e1000e was the correct driver. It was a really dumb mistake. I forgot to add the dhcpcd service to openrc after shutting down my computer the first time. I still have no idea what was causing the weird errors from the liveCD, though. Whelp, at least I'm connected to the internet. Do I mark this as closed or something? I don't see any options like that. |

There is no specific flag for resolved topics. By tradition, the title of the first post, which is also the title of the thread, is edited to include [SOLVED] or similar phrasing. The title can be edited by the original poster or by forum moderators, but we prefer users manage their own titles. |
