This one catched me by surprise, so I emerge --sync'ed today and this was part of the output:
Code: | The following mask changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.unmask" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)
# /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Andreas Sturmlechner <asturm@gentoo.org> (12 Dec 2017)
# Depends on dead kdelibs4/qt4, unmaintained upstream. No port to
# KF5 released.
# Possible alternatives are media-sound/cantata (an awesome mpd client),
# media-sound/clementine and media-sound/tomahawk (the latter also declared
# unmaintained upstream).
# Bug #635468. Masked for removal in 30 days.

kdelibs was in fact annoying, the only kde outdated package on my system, but I forgot that amarok uses it as dependency... So, no more amarok? I don't think that kde abandoned my favourite music player D: |

From what I can tell, there isn't any official word on amarok at all, beyond they haven't bothered updating it much. If anything, I have been seeing, amarok is only being updated by a single person, and it is hardly finished/working. That dev, still amarok is still around but nothing beyond that. I saw a few articles on the web saying elisa (not in the official portage tree) is going to be a replacement for amarok. Even then, I am seeing that is strictly going for music play, not collection manager; and even that isn't fully working yet either. |

Of course you can keep amarok in a local portage repository.. that's what I did.

I was once a big fan of Amarok long ago, with Amarok 1.x. Then there was quite a backlash with the new wave of changes for the 2.x line, mainly the hard dependency on mysql. It was preposterous that a simple media player requires a full-blown database engine as a hard dependency! I quit using Amarok immediately as a result. Luckily, there is another project to continue the legacy of the style of Amarok 1: Clementine. This project is severely lagging behind the move from QT4 to QT5, but the latest dev branch should be QT5 based and it's a matter of time until it's ready for a proper release. If Amarok's days are numbered, you may want to try this player out as a replacement. I know the portage package mask message mentions this but at least, if you didn't know about it, you've got some history about its relationship to Amarok. _________________ ProtonMail - Free encrypted e-mail from Switzerland

I'll give clementine a try, maybe it's decent enough to replace my amarok T.T |

For me, amarok is not broken, it does everything I want, and none of the proffered alternatives 'cut the mustard'.
I spent a couple of days working through alternatives before I re-installed amarok using the kde overlay.
I do find it annoying that things are removed simply because they are not maintained.
If I can still build and use it, why not leave it. Masked maybe, but not removed.
However, so long as it's still available in an overlay somewhere, I guess it's ok.
Efforts to keep gentoo portage tidy are appreciated. _________________ ...Lyall |

There might be security reasons involved too. And I hear kdelibs4 in general is a b**** ;)

This, too. Overlays are a powerful way to customize your Gentoo, as youve done! |

Good news everyone!
https://amarok.kde.org/en/node/888
So amarok is still being developed. This version is still based on Qt4 if I understood, but they promise the next one will work with Qt5. This makes me happy! Let's hope the port from Qt4 to Qt5 wont break it. |

I wonder if Clementine is still in development. I think it's pretty much like old Amarok (well it's a fork), but without kdelibs depency. _________________ ..: Zucca :..

This is basically finally releasing what was in preparation for years (after disabling the stuff that broke in the meantime since online services moved on).

Master branch is already KF5-based. |

Sure, check it out. I don't think though that it is a viable alternative for most amarok users.
Meanwhile amarok sees active development again. But they need to port away from embedded mysql before we can add it back to tree. |

I still use Amarok on Windows at work. There isn't any better Musik player for my needs. (Although I am too lazy to get MoodBar back working...)
If you don't mind overlays, you can add the "kde" overlay via layman and install media-sound/amarok-9999, which is KF5 based. I have to admit, though, that I did not test that one lately... _________________ Edited 220,176 times by Yamakuzure |

No idea if qt5 git Amarok is a good music player, it's not what I use it for, generally.
I tried lots of players, none have the podcast support I wanted.
Amarok used to.
QT5 git version is rather flakey at the moment, podcasts download one directory level too high after renaming the tmp file, and if you right click configure a podcast, it core dumps.
It does, however download the podcasts. I have raised these issues upstream.
Amarok 2 went through a similar rough period where things didn't go well. Lets hope the qt5 version shapes up _________________ ...Lyall |

Doesn't bode well if they can't even get spelling of 'retrieving' right on the main page. _________________ ...Lyall |

Amarok has always been completely independent from what you perceive as KDE 4.x 'experiment' and so 2.0 was a decision by the Amarok developers alone. So what you said simply makes no sense. |

amarok-99999 from the kde overlay seems to work mostly, the only issue I have is you can't edit podcast entries, it core dumps.
I use an external mariadb to store my amarok data, makes backing up easier.
Over the time I looked for an amarok replacement, I deleted the amarok preference files but left the mariadb database alone.
As such, when I re-installed amarok, all legacy settings where gone and only the database remained.
Music plays, but the context pane is empty, no lyrics, etc. Don't care. Music plays, podcasts download, it works well enough for my purposes.
I found the volume control to not be particularly intuitive. _________________ ...Lyall |

amarok/ChangeLog wrote: | VERSION 2.0-alpha1
FEATURES:
* Amarok defaults to using the standard music storage location of the
desktop environment.
* LastFM: Now using the new and improved 1.2 protocol.
* New Service Framework: Common framework for integrated services. A new
framework for adding the content of online services directly into Amarok
in a consistent and well integrated way. All services are plugins and can
be enabled or disabled form the new service config screen. Services that
are not loaded will not degrade performance or increase memory usage.
The service frameworks also offers for free, or makes it very simple to
add features such as cached albumcover downloads, searching and filtering
to the individual services. Services can also be track providers, meaning
that if amarok recieves a url that one of the services knows how to
handle, they will be presented with all the metadata that the servie can
provide.
* Magnatune.com store: Support for purchases using Magnatune gift cards
* Magnatune.com store: Support for the upcoming Magnatune.com stream and
download memberships, allowing uninterrupred streaming at higher quality
and free unlimited downloads respectively.
* Magnatune.com store: Add stream selection to the Magnatune service config,
allowing the selection of mp3, ogg or lo-fi mp3 streams, and make ogg the
default
* Jamendo.com service: Add new Jamendo service that allows for direct
streaming and (using the default bit torrent client) downloads.
* Mp3Tunes.com service: A service for streaming music from a personal
Mp3Tunes.com locker has been added.
* Ampache service: A new ampache plugin has been built on top of the service
framework. Together with a recent version of Ampache, this allows the
seamless integration of content from one or more Ampache servers directly
into Amarok
* OPML Directory service: A simple podcast directory service has been added
* Shoutcast service: The shoutcast list from previous versions of Amarok has
been reimplemented as a service.
* Scriptable Service Manager: Add support for writing simple services using
scripts. This allows quick prototyping of services as well as the
integration and distribution of community created services. The scripted
service can be started and stopped from the service manager. Also add 2
simple demo scripts.
* Playlist Framework: The Playlist Browser can now contain
Playlists/Podcasts/Streams from any mediadevice/service/collection in
addition to local files. Playlists are accessible by any Amarok subsystem
and scripts.
CHANGES:
* The context view was reimplemented with Plasma technology from KDE.
* The audio engine system was removed. Amarok now uses Phonon from KDE.
* Debugging output is now enabled with a runtime option (--debug). It's no
longer necessary to rebuild Amarok.
* Removed the amarok loader application.
* The custom color theme options have been removed.
* The player window (small XMMS like thingie) was removed.
* DCOP interface replaced with D-Bus.
* Dependencies lifted to KDE 4.1 and Qt 4.4. Refer to the README.
* Improved the startup time.
* The magnatune store is now implemented as a service, making it much more
seamlessly integrated with the rest of Amarok, and offering a number of
benefits such as propper filtering and sorting, automatic downloads and
caching of albums cover.
* Podcast fetching uses the new QXmlStreamReader with incremental parsing.
==BEGIN Qt 4.4 / KDE 4.1 DEPENDENCY==
VERSION 1.4.8
BUGFIXES:
* Make sure the localUrl of a PodcastEpisode is valid after a failed
download. (BR 147351)
* Fix off-by-one error causing Smart Playlists to not load tracks with a
rating >= 4.5. (BR 148916)
* Don't enable "Configure Podcasts" at the top-level Podcasts folder if
there is nothing beneath it. (BR 146504)
* Generic Media Device could copy some non-ASCII filenames to turn to
gibberish. Thanks to David Smith <davidsmith@acm.org> for the fix.
* Fixed possible GUI freeze when Amarok was showing the dialog for
installing mp3 support. Patch by Sascha Sommer <ssommer@suse.de>.
(BR 147126)
* Amarok could needlessely reinitialize connections to MySQL databases
after a configuration change. Combined with a bug in MySQL libraries,
this could lead to a crash.
* Pressing Preveious Track in a Dynamic Playlist could cause undefined
behavior in certain edge conditions. Now it always plays the current
track. (BR 148317)
* Immediately after loading a dynamic playlist, you couldn't drag a
track to the top of the playlist. (BR 149263)
* Fix transferring files with UTF8 names to MTP devices. Thanks to Kevin
Becker <kevman3000@gmail.com> for the fix. (BR 139722)
* Display warning that iPod sysinfo could not be written in the case of
incorrect file permissions. Patch by Christian Ober-Blöbaum
<cob@tzi.de>. (BR 148607)
* Fix Czech character conversion to ASCII for Generic Media Device. Patch
by Matěj Laitl <strohel@gmail.com>. (BR 149125) |
Whatever the chain of causation, Amarok in KDE 3 was my music player of choice and worked extremely well. Its reincarnation in KDE 4 was a train wreck. I persevered with Amarok for a number of 2.* releases until I finally lost patience with its problems (losing album covers, inability to play Audio CDs without the CD drive sounding like a jet engine at take-off, etc.) and ditched it. A crying shame that what many considered the best Linux music player in KDE 3 days went downhill. _________________ Clevo W230SS: amd64, VIDEO_CARDS="intel modesetting nvidia".

Amarok was neither part of KDE3 nor KDE SC4 and no dependency forced them to do what they did... |

This has nothing to do with Plasma 6, and as you can see is still Qt5 based. |
