Those who followed Windows history will probably deny this claim; and rightfully so. The Windows NT kernel has supported different subsystems since its actual inception.
However:
- The OS/2 subsystem for Windows NT did not make OS/2 more popular.
- The Interix subsystem for Windows NT (or one of its various versions, at least) did not make AIX more popular.
- The Ubuntu subsystem... well, you get the point.
Also, I don't think half-assed ABI simulation is good for actual work at all.
Re:containers, I firmly believe that the only reasonable approach to this are Solaris's zones. Docker, while famous among .io millennials, has the notable disadvantage of obscuring the contents of a "container", leading to a less cautious handling of the computer, resulting in major security problems. _________________ I already use the new Genthree. |
