I'm messing around with old hardware and here I've got a motherboard with an integrated geforce 6100. I was able to get everything to work, but I'd like to use a newer kernel (4.14). It seems there's no way to use the nouveau drivers because of stability issues (a lot of UI flickering). According to the nouveau website this is a compatibility issue. On the other hand the official drivers work fine with kernel 4.9, but of course I can't get it to compile against a newer kernel, because nvidia-drivers-304.137 + kernel 4.14 are not compatible. From what I understand it's possible to apply an epatch to 'fix' this, but I can't find one for this driver version. Could someone please point me to a working patch if even actually exists? Are there any other solutions to this problem? The idea is to optimize the system as much as possible and see what happens. |

Yeah, that did the trick.

I was able to run xfce4 and stream a youtube video at 480p in the latest version of Firefox with good performance on my AMD Sempron 3000+ 1 Gb of DDR1 ram. One thing I've noticed is that my system is now using more ram that it should (used to be ~100 mb, now it's ~300 mb). I'm using kernel 4.14.37 atm. I don't think I've misconfigured anything. Either way there's probably nothing to optimize driver or kernel wise since I've read through a lot of documentation about different settings, so I don't think there's more to do there. Streaming isn't perfect of course, but it's nice that HD video works (haven't tried FullHD yet).
Either way, thanks for the help. Now I'll continue messing around with it to satisfy my autism.

btw, what's with that 'ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid' message? In seems to work just fine, though. _________________ If dreams were horses, beggars would ride. |
