When I did, as root, the following:

cp .xinitrc /home/valerie

KDE was starting but blocking my pc (vb), I did the following, as a normal user:

rm .xinitrc

echo "exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session startkde" > .xinitrc

then startx, started a fully KDE environment
