Hi.
I'm having trouble installing rust. I synced today, so everything is nice and fresh, and my system was consistent -- until I went to install firefox, which has a rust dependency.
The compile crunches along for about 30 minutes, then bombs-out like this:

Probably because you have python3.6 set as primary and python single target _________________ UM780, 6.12 zen kernel, gcc 13, openrc, wayland |

Ok....
Sorry to be a bother, I got this working. It just needed one more reboot. _________________ To look without without looking within is like looking without without looking at all. |

I don't know that it's wrong but when I see something like this
Quote: | /var/tmp/portage/dev-lang/rust-1.28.0-r1/temp/python3.6/bin/python2.7 |
it makes me think something isn't right and it might need a use flag set or there is a use flag set wrong. _________________ UM780, 6.12 zen kernel, gcc 13, openrc, wayland |

Yes, in fact, that is where I got it from... but now I wonder if Anon-E-moose has a point... maybe it was supposed to be one or the other?
My system compiled though... no issues... so now I'm not sure! _________________ To look without without looking within is like looking without without looking at all. |

I have the same problem and a reboot has not fixed it.
I tried to set the python version for rust, but I still get this error.
Any ideas?
Best,

Hmm... I'm re-reading this:
https://www.gentoo.org/support/news-items/2018-05-22-python3-6.html
and now I'm thinking it isn't really necessary to have anything in your make.conf regarding python -- only if you want to force your system to use a particular python version. So, perhaps you could try just using PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python2_7" for your rust install?
Since I don't have this error anymore, and the reboot fixed it for me, it is difficult for me to replicate for you.... but are you certain it is the same error? Portage thinks it is python-1.4? _________________ To look without without looking within is like looking without without looking at all. |

You could try setting
Code: | dev-lang/rust python_targets_python2_7 python_single_target_python2_7 |
in /etc/portage/package.use
and see if that doesn't fix the problem.
edit to add: post the complete build log that shows the error (use pastebin, wgetpaste or similar) _________________ UM780, 6.12 zen kernel, gcc 13, openrc, wayland |

I've tried this and nothing changed.
It is the same error like the one in the first post.
The build log can be found here https://pastebin.com/84S8599i

What does "emerge -pv rust" return (the whole output) _________________ UM780, 6.12 zen kernel, gcc 13, openrc, wayland |

Have you checked your use flags, make.conf, keywords, and package.use files for anything strange? If you do an "emerge -pv rust" what output do you get?
Is your @world otherwise consistent?
Can you remove firefox from your world (and anything else that depends upon rust). Do your deplcean, your @preserved build, your "revdep-rebuild -i", your etc-update... until everything is satisfied, reboot and then try to add firefox?
If you set up your /etc/python-exec/python-exec.conf and did your "eselect python set", and then executed all the above... then I'm afraid I'm out of ideas... _________________ To look without without looking within is like looking without without looking at all. |

Lets go another direction.
Change
Code: | dev-lang/rust python_targets_python2_7 python_single_target_python2_7 |
to
Code: | dev-lang/rust python_targets_python3_6 python_single_target_python3_6 |
Will it run now?
I think it's getting confused because you have 3.6 set as primary and many packages are compiled for it, but you're telling it to use 2.7.
I have both on my system but I have 3.6 shut off completely unless I specifically turn it on for certain packages.
I just downloaded rust and ran it to the point of config and it ran successfully.
OR
One other thing you might try is set python 2.7 primary by way of eselect (log out and back in) then see if it will compile. _________________ UM780, 6.12 zen kernel, gcc 13, openrc, wayland |

My @world should be consistent.
I will try removing firefox etc this week.
@Anon-e-moose
This did not work either.
I haven't tried to change the python environment with eselect.

I added another use flag, that is not used by rust, nevertheless rust could be built. I do not understand that, but I don't care, the main thing is that it could be built.

That's good news mike!
Just out of curiosity, what was the flag you added? Was it to make.conf, or to package.use for just rust? _________________ To look without without looking within is like looking without without looking at all. |
