Looks like someone fixed the link at the bottom of the thread.
Thanks for reporting it. _________________ UM780, 6.1 zen kernel, gcc 13, profile 17.0 (custom bare multilib), openrc, wayland |

Actually, all of gentoo-wiki.info is redirecting to spam.
The official wiki is here https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Main_Page although I don't know if it has the article you are looking for.
edit: It would appear that the old owner gave up domain ownership.

It looks like someone has taken over gentoo-wiki.info for all the links pointing at it. Not just from Gentoo, either.
I've fixed the reported post but there will be literally 1,000s of links fron the forums pointing to that spam site now. _________________ Regards,

This is no good. Anything we can do to help clean it up? The forum admins could write a script that blanks any URL matching ^https?://gentoo-wiki.info in the meantime, but then we'd lose any chance of fixing those pointers. |

Ant P.
An easily found link spoiler would do.
Step 1. Spoil the existing links.
Step 2. Something better but I don't know what. The spoiler would need to be easily found, so it could possibly be rewritten later. _________________ Regards,

When spoiling the links, perhaps they should be rewritten to point to a new subsection of wiki.gentoo.org. That wiki could then be set so that any document under that subsection, if not otherwise found, displays a landing page explaining that it is a placeholder for lost content of gentoo-wiki.info. As people find documents that were salvaged from the older Wiki, they (or redirects to them) can be inserted at the appropriate location in wiki.gentoo.org. That would allow the existing forum links the chance to become good again, rather than just blanking them all forever. |

This is worrying for sure, especially for new users, I'll be sure to watch myself when clicking on links in old threads.
I've come to Gentoo very recently so a lot of the folklore is unknown to me; what happened to the old Wiki to warrant a new one? What did Hu mean by "documents that were salvaged from the older Wiki"? _________________

Marcih,
The old wiki was a a commercial site.
"salvaged from the older Wiki" means finding things in the Wayback Machine or other archives.
Its unlikely that Gentoo col rehost this material directly. Licensing differences between the old and new wiki would have to be examined. _________________ Regards,

this is the url of a legitimate post on gentoo linux forums:
https : //forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-372217.html
the second link provided in the thread starter appears,
at one point, to have directed to the gentoo linux wiki:
http : //gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Setup_A_Bittorrent_Tracker
but unfortunately the .org/.com change derails the forum user
to a page that is an advertisement about paid essay writing:
https : //www.customessaymeister.com/HOWTO_Setup_A_Bittorrent_Tracker
swapping out the .com for .org only returns a 404 error:
http : //gentoo-wiki.org/HOWTO_Setup_A_Bittorrent_Tracker
can anybody weigh in about the history of gentoo linux urls,
and is there any way to fix broken links in older posts? |

Teegrins, longpinkytoes!
The domain 'gentoo-wiki' never was an official Gentoo Linux one, and, as you have noticed, it no longer hosts the wikki it used to.
The official wiki is at:
While I do recall discussion with regards to the URLs in question, I can't remember what exactly was decided. I'll need to look and/or ask around a bit. _________________ Kindest of regardses. |

Merged in links derailed to clone website, and the reply to it (the two preceding posts).
Also removed the gentoo-wiki URL from the mentioned post. _________________ Kindest of regardses. |
