Sound issues

i have searched both this and Gentoo forums for the past few days and i haven't found a soloution

i installed Gentoo (2.4.20-gentoo-r8) the other day, and i managed to get everything that i wanted to work to work, except it seems the sound.

the best way of describing the fault is that the sound stutters

most of the time it seems to happen when i want to play dvds (i have tried using, totem, mplayer and xine, and the fault is still the same), but it happens when i view flash items on web pages, and even in xmms sometimes, also any system generated sounds, ie gnome startup and shutdown sounds and gaim.

but if i play an mpeg or i change xmms to use oss this doesn't seem to happen, but not all the software uses OSS, anyone any ideas to the cure of this problem

soundcard: Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 16)
window manager: gnome 2.4

here is the output of lsmod if that helps
