Alternate titles:
- Gentoo is love, Gentoo is life. I have made Gentoo my wife.
- I have become a Man, I have installed Gentoo.
Hello, I have just installed Gentoo, and I don't mean I got a base system working, I got X, a DE, internet and all the good stuff working. In fact, I am typing from it right now.
After compiling Chromium for a long time, I pressed the "Menu" button and clicked on it. 1~ nanosecond later, Chromium was open. Gentoo is love, Gentoo is life. I used to have to wait 20+ seconds for it to open on Window$. But that does not matter, today, my fellow Gentoo-ers, I have become one of you, I have become a true Man. The Gentoo kernel is gracing my laptop's processor after it's fourth compile, I can tell my processor is enjoying it.
Having programs launch so quickly is 100% worth all the Linux tinkering I did to get this working. Who knew X couldn't launch Cinnamon if DBus was not running? I certainly do now.
Even though almost every time I try to install a kinda-large piece of software, Portage complains, then I have to go to the wiki to decipher it's sayings, I suppose I'll get used to decipher what Portage wants without the wiki by time, but for now, having an old laptop with an i5 processor and no SSD launch Chromium so fast is definitely worth it. I'll have to see how games will fare on this system.
Also.. Who knew the Linux kernel contained so much good stuff?
> I was only 9 years old.
> I loved Gentoo so much, I had all the merchandise and movies.
> I pray to Gentoo every night before bed, thanking him for the ebuilds I've been given.
> "Gentoo is love" I say, "Gentoo is life."
> My dad hears me and calls me a nerd.
> I called him a computer illiterate M$ fag
> He slaps me and sends me to go to sleep.
> I'm crying now and my face hurts.
> A warmth is moving towards me.
> I hear the fan noises of compilation
> It's Gentoo.
> I'm so happy.
> He whispers in my ear, "this is my tty"
> He mv-s me with his powerful root capabilities and puts me on my chair.
> I'm ready.
> emerge chromium
> I can feel my processor heat and my fans speed up. My eyes water.
> I kiss the screen.
> Gentoo roars a mighty roar as it installed the compiled software.
> My dad walks in.
> Gentoo looks him straight in the eye and says, "It's all compiled now"
> Gentoo leaves through my window.
> Gentoo is love, Gentoo is life. _________________ As of June/15/2015, I am now a man, I have succeeded in installing Gentoo on my PC, getting Ethernet and WiFi to fully work, installing X and my favorite desktop environment, Cinnamon. I think it would be worth for Gentoo to have another psychanalist convince to use Gentoo.
You should try convince one. |

Actually, I do not visit 4chan that much. But I have a self-diagnosed case of meme disorder. And honestly, Gentoo simply needs more greentexts. _________________ As of June/15/2015, I am now a man, I have succeeded in installing Gentoo on my PC, getting Ethernet and WiFi to fully work, installing X and my favorite desktop environment, Cinnamon. Heh. I suspect it's one of our regular contributors just having some fun with us, although I haven't been able to catch them at it.

I don't actually get why the Gentoo install is supposed to be so hard, looking back at it, the only slightly challenging thing was choosing all the right stuff in the kernel. And maybe grub refusing to install, but that was solved with a Code: | GRUB_PLATFORMS="efi-64" | in the make.conf. Gotta thank the people on the IRC for that.

I wish I could contribute, but most of the code I write sucks on so many degrees, you won't believe it. _________________ As of June/15/2015, I am now a man, I have succeeded in installing Gentoo on my PC, getting Ethernet and WiFi to fully work, installing X and my favorite desktop environment, Cinnamon. Well, it's a lot easier nowadays, but it's pretty common to have some issues along the way, that don't come up when you're not on real hardware.
You sound like the sort of person who isn't afraid of doing their own research, which is exactly what you need for Gentoo.
Still, it's a milestone, right? Or you wouldn't have posted? In any event, I'd rather say "well done for getting there", than not. :-)

Since you've found freenode, I recommend you /autojoin #bash -- it will teach you an awful lot about modern UNIX, as well as many helpful tools and techniques for system administration (most of the well-known regulars there are sysadmins.)
BASH is also the implementation language for all ebuilds, so it'll be useful for that later, too. (Beware other sources on the internet: they're typically full of rubbish.)
Oh, you might like this tips page; see page 2 for the "basics". |

I wanna be a Man! Any suggestions what to do with my current wife? (This is the only thing right now that holds me back from installing Gentoo.) |

I'm not sure why people think Gentoo is 1337....
Gentoo is easy. You don't want a cron or log daemon on your laptop? Don't install one. Try that somewhere else and then say what dirstro is "hard". |
