now to start off i did a grub search and read everyone plus links.
what do i do at the grub> to get it to boot
grub>root says
(hd0,0):filesystem type is ext2fs,partition type 0x83

Hi there.
If you have 2 HDD like me (hda = Windows, hdb = Linux), in Grub's prompt type:
root (hd1,0)
setup (hd0)
If hda = Linux then type root (hd0,0) instead.

ok this came up
grub>(hd0,0)

runnin "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"...16 sectors are embedded
succeeded
running "instal /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+16 p (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage2/boot/grub/grub.conf"...succeede
done
ok now what
it is at a grub prompt how do i get gentto to run

gentoo should already be running and installed (assuming you're installing grub last) All you should do now is type quit at the grub prompt and restart your computer.

shutdown -r now |

i already rebooted and i did what i said above and it goes to a grub prompt.
quit doesnt do any thing at a grub prompt
ok typed in grub>reboot and it goes right to a grub prompt on reboot |

I guess you either don't have a grub.conf file, or it's somewhere grub can't find it, or the stuff in it is wrong. From the grub prompt you can still boot the system manually, check this thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=108566

I believe you may need to link grub.conf to your menu.lst. It is a small note in the install instructions.
ln -s /boot/grub/grub.conf /boot/grub/menu.lst
I had the same problem and when I made the link everything booted.
