When I'm trying to install gentoo-linux everythings goes well until somewhere in the 'emerge sync' process where I get this message and the computer hangs:

Code:

Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000107 printing eip:
c0237e76
*pde = 00000000
Oops: 0000
CPU: 0...

.....

..Process rsync..

...

<0>Kernel panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!
In interrupt handler - not syncing

The computer is an AMD at 350MHz.

How to solve this?

Same thing happens with me using live CD:
pentium3-1.4-20030911-cd1.iso

for my p3 500. This is my first time installing gentoo (moving from RH 9).
The error looks something like:
>>>starting rsync with rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage...
invalid operand: 0000
tulip floppy serial isa-pnp cloop usb-storage hid uhci usbcore
CPU: 0
EIP 0010[<c029c63a>] Tainted: GF
.
.
.
<0>Kernel panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!
In interrupt handler - not syncing

Then my computer locks up and I have to power down (reset button doesn't work).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I also read another thread that it may have something do with the errors in the file system so I tried both reisser and ext3 for /dev/hda3. Should I try and fdisk and format /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda2 ?

curious to know if you got to the bottom of this issue. I'm getting this on my system when I try running X. This is after a kernel recompile and the re-emerging of my nvidia-kernel.

Here's my error:

if you do, try emerge gentoo-dev-sources instead.

One other thing to note is that I'm getting an alsa driver error (something to the effect of "cannot load alsa drivers, make sure they are properly installed") during boot.

Could this have anything to do with this? I did re-emerge alsa when I recompiled my kernel last night...and sound was working before I re-emerged the nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx.

I'm pretty sure that it's the new nvidia driver causing the oops error ...some kind of conflict with the newer via chipset. I'm seeing loads of these similar errors on the nvidia forums. I'll report back when I figure out how to get out of this.

Fixed by unmerging the new nvidia drivers and reinstalling the old 4496 ones.
