so, out of the blue, gentoo decides to throw fits for me. its probably something i did, but for the life of me i cant figure out what. when it boots up it goes through the "calculating dependencies" step and fails. it then proceeds to fail to load up everything i need to get my network connection working including pcmcia. one it is booted, i can (as root) do the
-> insmod pcmcia_core
-> insmod i82365
-> insmod ds
-> cardmgr -f

and it comes right up. i really want it to load up correctly at boot. anyone else had this problem? can anyone help?

Doesn't it happen after you recompile your kernel?
If depmod -a gives you errors, it means that you should clean your modules and recompile them

The script who checks the dependencies is
/etc/init.d/modules

this is this part who fails for you :
Code:

        ebegin "Calculating module dependencies"
        /usr/sbin/update-modules &>/dev/null
        eend $? "Failed to calculate dependencies"

You should try to run /usr/sbin/update-modules to check what is wrong

sebest,

Thanks for the tip. I rebooted today and received the "Failed to calculate dependencies." Your advice pointed me in the right direction. The new baselayout moved /usr/sbin/update-modules to /sbin/update-modules. Relinking solved the problem.

That's probably worth a bug report.

Strange enough my system got the same error today when I tried to install lm_sensors and had to recompile my kernel. Don't know why that spesific link disappeared, but relinking fixed the problem...

I just love this forum :D

How exactly did you relink? I think I have the same problem. I looked in /usr/sbin/ and there wasn't and update-modules so I just copied the one from /sbin/ there. Was I supposed to do something else? I still get the error. Thanks

I had this same problem as well. I just modified /etc/init.d/modules though.

Have you read the bug report? There is a statement of this problem and the solution.
