Garbled text in Virtualbox

This looks like some sort of Qt issue but I don't know what's going on. You can see the colored/garbled text in the screenshot.

System Qt is 5.11.1 and it looks like VB is falling back to bundled 5.6.1.

Also of note is that if I create a brand new user, this does not show up. So, its something in the settings but I don't know which setting is determining this. Hence the question here.
