|
|
I have the following problem:
I configured X by using the following command.
It wrote a new file to my /root directory and I copied that into the /etc/X11 directory. Everything worked out fine and I tried starting X by typing:
The my screen goes black and it loads. I get a cursor on the screen and I can move the cursor around , but I can't see the "black-and-white stipple pattern" (which I'm supposed to get according to the manual). All I can see is a black screen with the cursor on it. What's gone wrong here? Please Help!

I have tried start X and it works fine, but I don't get the background, that is what's worrying me. In all the configuration manuals it says that you are supposed to have a "black-and-white stipple pattern" as the background. My startx works finde and I get the windows up and running, but I don't see the background. What could be the problem here? Do you have a background?? |

I don't get that pattern. You should get it only if your DE doesn't overwrite it. KDE does, so I can't see it. |

What do you mean by DE? I haven't installed anyting (no KDE, no Gentoo)? So I should get the pattern...right? |

Probably not, I haven't seen it since XFree86 4.3.0 came out. Either Gentoo does something non-standard when it installs XFree, or recent versions of XFree don't display that pattern. Now if I start X without a windowmanager or anything, all I see is a black screen with a mouse pointer. |

Black background instead of pattern: edit /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers:
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -br
The "-br" causes the black-only background. |
