The FAQ indicates that you can download a package and place it in /usr/portage/distfiles. Then to install it:
emerge package
Well, would someone please point my to the post that already answers this, as I can't find the right search terms on my own.
I downloaded the most recent linux-printing .tgz and can't seem to issue any command that will install it. It is 'espgs-7.05.4-source.tar'(I already unpacked it). TIA, Bill |

i wasnt aware that you could do what your talking about...for it to work properly it has to have an ebuild script and a digest in the files directory of the directory the ebuild is stored in , either in portage or now you can create an optional directory for ebuilds and digests/patches for software you have written ebuilds for. this is added to the make.conf
there are cases that you will be asked to download the needed src tarball and place it in the distilfiles directory then envoke the ebuild written for the program with the 'emerge foo' command.
you can install programs in the usual way such as ./configure make make install , read the doucumentation that came with the software you unpacked. of corse doing it this way circumvents the whole portage thing |

Thanks rommel. Your explanation cleared that up for me. I now understand that I can download an already scripted/digested app. and place it in /usr/portage/distfiles, then run 'emerge package' and it will install it(per the FAQ).
Is there a general time frame that it takes the 'suits' <g> at gentoo to update a new printing release? TIA, Bill |
