For some reason my fan (i think it's my fan) is making an annoying high-pitched whine when my computer is just sitting doing nothing. When I start an application like XMMS, it stops though (I'm sure it's not just that I can't hear it because of the music, it really does stop). Is there anything I could do about this? It doesn't whine when I boot Windows or if I boot the 2.4.22 kernel. I'm currently using the 2.6 test 9 kernel. _________________ Gentoo: It hurts so good... |

take the cover off and have a look at it when its whining and not whining. Probably worth getting one of those air sprayers and just hosing the inside of the fan and case _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)

I can't really take the cover off, it's a laptop so it's really difficult. Also, I did spray compressed air into it and it didn't help. Like I said, when I'm playing songs in XMMS it doesn't whine, but when it's just sitting there it does, and nothing happens in Windows either. _________________ Gentoo: It hurts so good... |

Thought I'd jump in, since all the avatars are matrix-related.
It may not actually be your processor fan that's making the noise. Whenever the graphics chip on my laptop is rendering anything with GL, it makes a very faint (but high-pitched) noise. However, you may want to Code: | ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge cpudyn | and see if that helps. _________________ Are you out of your Vulcan mind? |

If you aren't using sound on the laptop at the time, try muteing all channels. Probably crosstalk/interference in the audio chipset from something big and powerhungry, like the GPU or CPU.
I know my desktop box has picked up an annoying whine/buzz that comes out thru the speakers when it is doing window scrolling. I don't think it did it before, but I'm not sure as there was so much more noise in my room before I probably wouldn't have noticed (fans, AC, etc).
May have to drop back in my SBLive card. I don't think it has similar problems. |

I emerged cpudyn then ran it and the whining instantly stopped...what did it do? _________________ Gentoo: It hurts so good... |

Sitting doing nothing?
could this be related to some type of processor throttling slowing down the cpu fan? Not making the sound when running an app is what makes me think this. Also running the 2.4 vanilla kernel might not make the whinning sound because the 2.6 series has some major acpi enhancements.

cpudyn manages your CPU speed, by reducing the CPU frequency when your system isn't busy, and increasing it when it is; it does this continuously as long as it's running, based on how much load there is on the CPU. The default config includes sensible settings for most people's machines. In general, CPU frequency scaling is a Good Thing -- it keeps your CPU and laptop cooler when it's idle, and extends your battery life.
Re. the whine, have you determined whether it's a fan or something else? Running cpudyn should let things be cooler, at least when the system is idle, so if it's a fan, this should help. Could be interference from the CPU coming through over the speakers, though, and if so, cpudyn might modulate the sound, but not eliminate it altogether if it's something that comes through when the CPU runs at full clock speed; muting would be a test for that. |

It's not coming through my speakers, I know that. When I compile the latest test kernel I'll build in CPU Throttling, because I thought that was causing a problem last time so I left it out. We'll see what happens after that. _________________ Gentoo: It hurts so good... |
