HP Officejet v40xi worked, now it doesn't

Hi,

My HP Officejet v40xi was working about a month ago, and now it doesn't. I think that the root cause is that I blindly updated ebuilds when things were working fine (lesson learned-I think).

I have read all of the threads I could find on the subject. The most promising were those that indicated unmerging newer ebuilds and selectively merging specific older ebuilds of cups/foomatic/ghostscript/gimp-print. However, those threads are so old, that the ebuilds they refer to are no longer on portage.

I have been trying to work through the Gentoo Printing Guide. I have gotten to the part where I modprobe for usbcore and printer. They are both there. When I plug in the printer and dmesg I get:

hub.c: new USB device 00:1f.2-2.3, assigned address 7
printer.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 7 if 0 alt 1 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x1011

Okay, the printer is recognized by the system. However, when I do the following:

bash-2.05b# foomatic-configure -s cups -p HP-OfficeJet_V40xi -c file:/dev/usb/lp0 -n HPPrinter -d hpijs

I get the following in response:

lpinfo: Unable to connect to server: Connection refused
lpadmin: Unable to connect to server: Connection refused
Could not set up/change the queue "HPPrinter"!

I cannot go to localhost:631 either. I get something like connection to server failed.

I know my printer will work, because it has worked before. I am missing something.

I have hpijs emerged, hpoj emerged (following the setup and start) to no avail.

Help please!
