|
|
I was flying along on my system yesterday and decided to plug in a USB digital camera that someone had lent me. Suddenly there was this huge electrical shock and my entire system died! According to my talking BIOS, the cpu has failed (and god knows what else), so I am wondering how in the world I can recover my 160 gigs of life? Can I just buy a new cpu (and possibly a motherboard) and try to boot? ANY help would be very appreciated, this was my first gentoo system so I am still somewhat a newb.
Now I am off to drink some beer. _________________ evolve or die |

If your cpu is fried, chances are, your mobo has suffered some damage too :\ If you buy a different model, it will take some time getting gentoo back up and running (emerge world). The first thing I would do, in your situation, is pull out your 160 gig hard disk, and pop it into a working system... and backup everything you want to keep. |

Thanks for the reply.
So I will just be able to put the drive into a different computer and mount it without authentication, etc. issues?
I am assuming it will have to be another linux computer? _________________ evolve or die |

if you shocked your system I would think the bios eeprom is what failed and not your CPU.
This may be a bogus error message.
It could also be that your south bridge is gone, and that makes the bios think your cpu isn't there.
(USB connects to your system through the south bridge except the K7S5A boards which had an SIS chipset) _________________ Abit KD7-S

Quote: | I am assuming it will have to be another linux computer? | Depends on the filesystem. If it's ext2/ext3 you can use explore2fs I think it's called from windows.
If your hard drive seems fine then you can get a new motherboard/cpu or whatever needs replacing and boot off it like nothing happened. If it's a different motherboard it will still boot but you'll likely have to tweak your kernel for everything to run properly.
If you haven't used the usb jack before that you plugged the camera into and it's one on your case (as opposed to being on the motherboard) then you might want to make sure it's hooked up to the motherboard properly. I'm just wondering what would of caused the electrical problem. |
