|

my system specs:
Mainboard: Epox EP8rDa3+ (with an nforce2 chipset)
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2400+
kernel: development-sources 2.6.0_beta9
hi,
i have a very strange problem when starting the x-server using the nvidia kernel modules after having bootet a 2.6.0 kernel.
to illustrate it i'll attach a few pics. they'll propably say more than hundreds of words :
thats my screen after having typed "/etc/init.d/gdm start":
www.narfpage.de.vu/gentoo/xserver.jpg
i couldn't switch to any other virtual terminals (is this the right expression ?) any more and so i used my magic-sysrq key and killed it (ALT+SysRQ+K)
that's what i get:
www.narfpage.de.vu/gentoo/loginprompt.jpg
although i everything looks a little bit strange i can login, browse directorys, copy -, edit - and remove files, ... , ...
that's my screen after having typed "cd /etc" and "ls":
www.narfpage.de.vu/gentoo/browsing.jpg
very strange, isn't it
when running the xserver using the nv driver it starts.
please help me . i need to upgrade to 2.6.0 (used 2.4.22-ac4 before) because it seems to be the only way to enable dma for my cd-recorder
other things that might help:
my kernelkonfig:

i just found out that my topic seems to be posted for several times. i'm sorry. this wasn't my intention. i'd hit the SUBMIT button for a few times because something seemed to be wrong with the gentooforum server and my topic didn't seem to be transmitted.
/edit:
seems like the duplicated topics where moved to "Duplicated Topics". thank's |

hmm... try disabling acpi from your kernel config or set as kernel parameter in boot prompt "acpi=off". Helped? |

@tojo:
thanks for your hint but it didn't help.
but somehow CONFIG_ACPI_BOOT is enabled although i disabled all the ACPI-stuff in "make menuconfig"
could this be the reason ?
#
# ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) Support
#
# CONFIG_ACPI is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_BOOT=y |

Strange.. I had same problems with gentoo-sources and disabling acpi was a solution for this. I'm now using gs-sources-2.4.23_pre6-r1 with ACPI enabled and working fine. I haven't yet tested 2.6.0-series.. but can you try gs-sources? |

I had the same problem. It is caused by the agpgart of the kernel, just put:
in your XF86Config in the section for your graphics card. This will enable the nvidia module's AGP driver.
edit:
At least it worked for me. |
