I am installing stage 1 of Gentoo and I emerged portage, which worked fine, but now I received a warning saying there was a portage update. The installalation guide said to emerge -u portage to do the update but when I did, I got an error. There were 44 packages to install and it got through 3 of them just fine but on the 4th one I got the following error:

Code:

checking how to run the C++ preprocessor... /lib/cpp
configure: error: C++ preprocessor "lib/cpp" fails sanity check

!!! ERROR: sys-libs/ncurses-5.3-r2 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 324, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed

I ran into the same thing... Even though it says to update, don't until after you've done the boot-strapping. All the neccessary libs will be in place then and it'll take care of itself.

I ran into this problem as well. I wasn't thinking (cut me some slack, I was at work ) and didn't consider that I hadn't bootstrapped yet. I unmerged the two packages that did successfully merge (gnuconfig and patch) and went on to bootstrapping.

I have filed a bug in regards to this issue:

Cheers

Phooy. I went ahead and I'm now in the middle of of an emerge -u portage. Then I checked the boards (what a maroon).... as I'm typing this I got an error in the middle of updating portage. Should I continue with the install or should I start the install over?

Just continue with the install and do the update after you emerge bootstrap.sh
