I have a desktop running the most recent KDE (5?) w/plasma, etc. I am trying to print. The printer is a network-shared printer on a Windows server- it's running 2008r2, so I think it is SMB2. I have compiled Samba with zeroconf suppport, and it shows in the CUPS web interface as a Samba-shared printer.
CUPS is reporting the following:
Code:
Paused - "Can't load /etc/samba/smb.conf - run testparm to debug it"

so I checked and - Surprise - there is no file /etc/samba/smb.conf! not that much of a surprise, since I didn't create one.
I have been through a number of documents, but they all want a smb.conf set up to share from the computer- I just want to be a network client acessing a remotely-shared printer. I haven't seen anything at first glance that gives me the basic smb.conf that I need.
I am on a domain network- should I be looking at trying to integrate local machine authentication into that? It's a project for a different day/thread.

What do I need to print to this printer? It's an HP color laserjet, and is using the PCL6 driver on the print server, so I am assuming that I will also use the HP PCL6 option in CUPS... I think I just need the SAMBA piece to get printing... and it looks like creating and properly filling in the smb.conf file will accomplish this.
I want this to work like I am sitting at a Windows PC- meaning I'll probably need to define a username and password that CUPS uses to access the share on the printserver- and I'm assuming that is also in the smb.conf. I can ping the server as long as I use the FQDN... haven't bothered trying to get the NETBIOS part working since I use FQDN's for everything anyway.

I can offer more detail, but I've probably overdone it- if anyone can help, I appreciate it. Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks!
