System is now based on ArchLinux and built using archiso and its dependencies
Kernel and user space programs are now fully 64 bit (dropped 32bit support)
Boot options are the ones provided by new upstream rather than old version
Graphical environment based on xorg-1.20.3 and xfce-4.12
Implemented “setkmap=xx” option on the boot command line to setup keyboard
Updated kernel to Long-Term-Supported linux-4.19.19
Updated filesystem tools: e2fsprogs-1.44.5, xfsprogs-4.19.0, btrfs-progs-4.19.1
Updated disk tools: gparted-0.33.0, lvm2-2.02.183

Guess I'll have to fork 5.3.2 then. I wonder what made him switch. |

This is a sad day for Gentoo!
I would like to know why they moved to Arch. |

Well I'd think it is a sad day for sysresccd. |

How disappointing.
My guess is that the developers of SystemRescueCd wanted to switch to a binary distribution to facilitate building each new release, albeit a binary distribution with more flexibility and configurability than the more mainstream releases. _________________ Clevo W230SS: amd64, VIDEO_CARDS="intel modesetting nvidia".

my understanding was that building the sysresccd was challenging... fearedbliss was using it to make zfs livecd's and when he retired he gave me some instructions to keep making them, but i found catalyst (to make gentoo livecds) much easier to comprehend. _________________

I honestly since evolved. I now have a few kernels I compiled myself, and a few netinstalls from other distros and I even made myself a new "iso" although its a pxe image for windows 7... in today technology you boot from network.
disk boot like from diskette is obsolete. boot from original cd or rewritable cd... obsolete. from dvd... obsolete. from usb drive... OBSOLETE.
we boot from network now. coz we can, and our computers can. and you can make a nice multi os menu to install any os. just need dhcp, bind and a tftp daemon.
think about it. universal network boot server. to install any os you feel like. it is easy to be done. and much cooler than any dvd live image. in fact, a nfs4 in your face demo of linux... booted from network... no disk of any sort... i done that. |

I found out a hard way. I install SysRescCd on the hard drive for all machines on the LAN, to have a quick rescue environment in case I really mangle my usual work environment. The script that mounts the ISO and copies the relevant files, updates lilo.conf and so on, well that script failed spectacularly yesterday.
Now trying to figure out how to do similar with 6.0.0, if possible. The SysRescCd webpage hasn't been updated on the "install to HD" part, but the 6.0.0.iso does have some files with brief instructions. Meanwhile, 5.3.2 is there and known to work. |

I have a customized sysresccd 5.3.2 with latest gcc 8.2 toolchain weekly updated with latest gentoo repo sync, still keep binary kernel as-is. The kernel itself inherited from fedora with aufs enabled. It amazing fast because all the excutables is 32-bit and equipped of all-kind of recovery, cloning tools like fsarchiver, partclone, partimage. I even use it for cloning Windows setup from PC to PC with fsarchiver and a bootable WinPE USB. |

I still have several 32 bit machines. Very disappointing. Having said that, I've actually been using a very archaic version of system rescue CD for some time. I just downloaded 5.3.2 after reading this. I haven't tried it as yet...does 5.3.2 support 32 bit?

5.3.2 does support 32 bit. Has 32 bit and 64 bit versions of the kernel
Code: | .rescue32: Linux kernel x86 boot executable bzImage, version 4.14.80-std532-i686 (root@rl-sysrcd-p11) #2 SMP Sun Nov 11 19:32:48 UTC 2018, RO-rootFS, swap_dev 0x9, Normal VGA |

Systemrescuecd has gone systemd (A.K.A. "gone to the dogs").
Just tested it. It is a load of crap.
Code: | echo ">=app-admin/systemrescuecd-x86-6.0.0" >> /etc/portage/package.mask/packages |
I have been using it for years and years.
What a pity. |

The snake has entered the garden. I wonder if Linux will be just IBM Windows RH by the time that I die. |

Now that it's 64-bit-only, I guess this blind version bump (and also the package *name*) is in error… |

Well, looks like I'll be keeping the last Gentoo based .iso around. I don't understand the switch to Arch at all. _________________ "You can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think" ~ Dorothy Parker

Me too, I'm disappointed by the switch to arch and systemd.
But here I see many skills and interest on a live gentoo, maybe there is a way to integrate some administration tools in the official LiveDVD?
Maybe this forum can host a section for testing, debugging and... chats. :-) _________________ proud user of faKeDE-4.7.3 -> back to windowmaker -> moved to LXQt |

This sucks, I've always used it to install Gentoo. I'll probably keep using the older version for now. _________________

Packages too old? too complex? new blood into the project that strongly advocated arch _________________

Sometimes I get the feeling that Arch is becoming the Red Hat of rolling release distros. |

Do you mean swapping the word rescue with revival/revive, or would revival be the full name? |

Arch Linux breaks everyday, they're all ADHD when it comes to updating things. Minutes after a new version of anything comes out, a bunch of 12 year olds jump on it and push it in right away. |
