Hi there,
after several months I did a system update.
I'm using an old Nvidia Quadro FX 3800 graphics card with nvidia-driver-340.107.
Now when the system starts, sddm starts, but doesn't switch to X. There's no error message, no crash. It simply doesn't switch into the graphics mode. The active console remains on tty1. sddm shows an active process.
Code: | ps aux | grep sddm
root 556 0.0 0.0 136060 14728 ? Ssl 18:44 0:00 /usr/bin/sddm |
Do I login as user and start X with startx the X-Server starts and loads my window manager.
eix sddm: | [I] x11-misc/sddm
Available versions: [M]0.15.0 0.18.0 {consolekit elogind +pam systemd test}
Installed versions: 0.18.0(11:06:56 02/15/19)(pam systemd -consolekit -elogind -test)
Homepage: https://github.com/sddm/sddm
Description: Simple Desktop Display Manager |
Yes, I'm using systemd.
How can I motivate sddm to provide me a graphical login prompt?

Downgraded to sddm-0.15.0. (unmasked 0.15.0, masked 0.18.0)
Works.
SDDM starts, starts the X-Server and gives me a login window. Should I file a bug? |

Yes. If the old version works, the new version fails, and there is no documented manual migration path that you were told to follow, then I would say the new version has a bug. It may be a documentation bug for not telling you how to upgrade it. It may be a code bug for not working without user intervention. |

Found this.
Fun fact, that sddm-0.15.0 has been masked. |

Code: | # Masked per security vulnerability CVE-2018-14345, bug #661510
# Keeping it masked while users have unsolved issues with >0.15.0. |
Better masked than dropped, right? |
