|
|
Hey all -
When I went to set up my profile, I noticed that the only option for "Board Style" was "subSilver." While this is a nice option, there are others that I would prefer. I searched the forums and came up with this thread. I found that there were other styles originally, but they were later removed. As it says at the end of the thread, Nitro would be willing to add them again if there is enough demand.
I personally think that it is nice to be able to customize the look and feel of even web pages because it lets it fit in with your personality a bit more. I personally would like to be able to switch my board style, but would not want it to be a hassle to the site admins.
So I present this poll to you. Please vote appropriately, and if there is enough demand, maybe we can add some. If not, I'll gracefully let the thread die and accept the forums for what they are (I'll grant you this was a pretty good choice for a "standard" style).
Click here to preview the styles on the phpBB site.
And here are some links to some styles that I like:
Coldsteel
Darkside
Last Crusade (I have a thing for orange )
Anyway, please comment, whether you really like the idea or just think its stupid and useless.

Missing an option: subSilver looks nice
There has been talk of this for a long time before this, and the forums will likely be redesigned to blend nicely with gentoo.org. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

The current one works for me. I'd rather see an 'official' theme, and leave it at that. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I think this style is great. One of the problems with styles is maintaining different mods for phpBB, and makes upgrades (for security or features) very hard.
IMHO it's not worth the hassle. _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

one thing that I would want is a template with less tables.
phpbb used useless nested <table> everywhere, making the pages twice as big as they should be (probably more, actually) . making a clean template using css could easily cut of the bandwith usage... _________________ mat |

Alternatively, mod_gzip could be used to cut bandwidth by 80% or more. However, the forums tend to be CPU-bound, meaning the overhead of compressing makes it less worthwhile.

Nitro may feel differently, but I'm against any non-standard phpBB styles because they make upgrading to a new version of phpBB a bitch.
So, while we may add our own, customized Gentoo theme at some point, I wouldn't hold my breath for any non-standard phpBB theme.
That said, I'll talk to Nitro about at least adding the rest of the sub* themes. He mentioned a while back that there were some problems with the themes and some of the phpBB mods that we use, so that may prevent their inclusion.

I would really like to have a choice of a different theme. Actually I like subSilver fine in general. I'm not a big theme-aholic; I'd rather just enjoy the content and not think about the style. But there's one big problem for me : I can barely see the scroll bar under Konqueror; please see my screenshot of my window :
http://hiro-tan.org/tmp/subsilver.png (look on the far right of the window)
I know some of you use mozilla or galeon and it looks fine for you. But some of us like Konqueror; I have mozilla and galeon (this is gentoo; I emerge as much as I have disk space for! , but I simply prefer Konqueror. Please think about it. I'll put a paypal donation for $10 to the cause of your choice if one of you admins does this; I'm not joking, you have my word on that.
thanks,
eugene

weird... I thought only IE supported scrollbar color changing (which sucks, a webmaster should not be allowed to change the browser UI of his visitors... hum never mind)
If that is the problem, then its easy, someone just change
https://forums.gentoo.org/templates/subSilver/subSilver.css
like this : (you can remove the lines I commented out :)
body {
background-color: #E5E5E5;
/*
scrollbar-face-color: #DEE3E7;
scrollbar-highlight-color: #FFFFFF;
scrollbar-shadow-color: #DEE3E7;
scrollbar-3dlight-color: #D1D7DC;
scrollbar-arrow-color: #006699;
scrollbar-track-color: #EFEFEF;
scrollbar-darkshadow-color: #98AAB1;
*/
}
if that doesnt fix it, well its a problem with konq :) |

Actually, I just checked it in Konqueror and it seems to work fine for me. Perhaps the original poster has their color depth set low on their computer? (mine's at 16 on this comp)
Either way, Konqueror supports user-defined stylesheets, so the easiest way to solve the problem is to create a user-side CSS that overrides scrollbar settings.
Something like what dioxmat posted:
Code: | body {
scrollbar-face-color: #DEE3E7;
scrollbar-highlight-color: #FFFFFF;
scrollbar-shadow-color: #DEE3E7;
scrollbar-3dlight-color: #D1D7DC;
scrollbar-arrow-color: #006699;
scrollbar-track-color: #EFEFEF;
scrollbar-darkshadow-color: #98AAB1;
} |
But play around with the colors to increase the contrast to suit your tastes.
As long as you *only* define the scrollbar settings in your user-side CSS, I don't believe it should override other server-side CSS settings.

use !important rules for this. |

This has nothing to do with the color depth, it is kde style dependant. Some style won't allow changing the color of the scrollbar handle (e.g. keramik) while others do (like kde's default style). _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

I like the current theme, but I'm not opposed to more options unless they seriously hinder the ability to upgrade/maintain the system. There have been a lot of comments about how 'cool' the forums look anyway. It might be particularly nice if the forums made a custom gentoo theme, but that's still just icing on the cake for me. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

The only "official" theme offered by phpBB is subSilver. (What you're looking at now) So, that means that if we install a bunch of other themes, there's no guarantee that the authors will keep them updated and maintained in a timely fashion. So, once phpBB 2.2 comes out, we either have to a) drop the themes that don't get upgraded in time or b) wait until all the themes in use get updated before upgrading to the next version. Keep in mind that the upgrade from 2.0.0 to 2.0.1 fixed a fairly serious cross-site scripting vulnerability, so upgrades aren't always just a nicety -- they're often a necessity.

If someone wants to do something like this, I'd be interested in talking to them. We'd certainly like a theme that matched the current Gentoo look 'n' feel, as long as it comes with someone who's willing to maintain it.
