Resetting CUPS Password

As usual CUPS never works after a Portage upgrade, but that's
not the big problem. When logging in with my browser
if I suspend my printer it allows me to log in. When I want to
restart the printer it refuses the exact same login name
and password.

This is a stand alone machine with a local printer. How can
I reset the login name and password? I did not use the original
"root" as a login. Big mistake.

I would like to return to the default and start over.

When the CUPS browser GUI prompts you for a username and password, do you mean that it does not accept 'root' for the username and the root user's password for the password?

What do the following commands return?:

Yes, that's right. I could simply uninstall I suppose and then reinstall, but I must consider there is some config
file that would remain.

I'd like to just get rid of CUPS as it is flakey on my printer. By that I mean after an update the printer
may work fine though not fast. With the next portage update it then will no longer print.

returns: lpadmin

grep lp /etc/group
returns: lp:x:7:lp
lpadmin:x:106:
