I'm trying to emerge dev-qt/qtgui-5.12.3-r1::gentoo but the compile just stops running. It doesn't exit or fail - it just finishes one compile job and does nothing. There are no compile processes running, the system load drops to idle, nothing going on. Tried it three times - always stops in the same place.

Solution:
My processor does not support aes. Added -mno-aes to CFLAGS and rebuilt qtcore.

Build log:

https://dean.beer/dev-qt-qtgui-5.12.3-r1-20190807-235007.log

emerge --info

Could be the OOM killer. Are there any messages in 'dmesg'?

Just re-ran the emerge while watching meminfo and dmesg. MemFree dipped as low as 80 Mb, but never ran out.

Even OOM would've produced *some* error in the log.

Possible the disk is running out of space or inodes and can't write to the log afterwards?

It's probably just busy swapping.

Disable swap and let it tell you a story. :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I disabled my swap and re-ran the build. Petered out at the same place. I had about 750 mb of free memory at the time. Doesn't appear to be swap-related.

I've run gentoo on this laptop for probably 10 years and never run into anything like this. Recently changed out the spinning drive for an SSD and re-installed from scratch. It handled the @world build just fine then. Just prior to this world upgrade I installed and enabled laptop-mode-tools and made some kernel ACPI tweaks. Could that be halting the build?

This is where it is stopping:

Code:

  1. What happens if you set MAKEOPTS="-j1"?

  2. What happens if you disable the sandbox?
    Code:
    FEATURES="-sandbox -usersandbox" emerge --oneshot dev-qt/qtgui

The build appears to halt with this message now:

Code:
Incompatible processor. This Qt build requires the following features:
    aes

I'll see if there's a USE flag or kernel option to enable and report back.[/code]

Your processor haven't the AES instruction set, try to add -mno-aes in your cflags

Good to have in my CFLAGS now, but same result on the build.

The solution was to rebuild qtcore with -mno-aes as suggested in this forum post.

Why do you use
Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -march=corei7-avx -msahf -mtune=corei7-avx"

instead of the recommended value:
Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -march=native"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

Just run
Code:
gcc -### -e -v -march=native /usr/include/stdlib.h

to see all the flags GCC will select if you use '-march=native'.

I followed this guide donkeys years ago and haven't thought about it since.
