well what sound card are you using? do cat /proc/pci
and post the output here. about the cdrom you need to mount a cdrom before you can see the files on it. a quick way to mount a cdrom would be like this mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom this will mount the master cdrom on the secondary ide channel at /mnt/cdrom. so after running this command youl be able to see the cdrom in /mnt/cdrom/. some cds arent mounted like audio cds and vcd discs.give us the output of cat /proc/pci and well see if we can get youre sound working :D

Hi

I had trouble getting my sound setup when I installed Gentoo, following the ALSA docs (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml) got everything sorted out for me.

Still having troubles with my cd-rom drive myself (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=110126)

intel8x0 is what you want to replace emu10k1 with in the guide to get this working :D just follow them step by step and remember to install alsa-oss

You don't need to emerge intel8x0, what you need to do is follow the alsa guide, but in the instructions replace emu10k1 with intel8x0. e.g. in code 2.4 instead of this:

Code:
env ALSA_CARDS='emu10k1' emerge alsa-driver

you want to use this:

Code:
env ALSA_CARDS='intel8x0' emerge alsa-driver

The same goes for any other times emu10k1 is used in the guide.

hey i am runnign in a small problem at the starting.. i read the rest.. i think i can figure it out... here is what i dont' understand:
Code:
Since we're still using 2.4.x kernel sources, we'll have to compile kernel modules and ALSA modules separately. People who are using a 2.5.x kernel can do this from within their kernel configuration, since the ALSA modules are included in the kernel sources and should be built there.

First we'll make sure that our kernel configuration is ready for use with ALSA. All you need in your kernel configuration is having Sound Card Support set to be built as a module (M). This will build soundcore.o.

this is what the alsa quide is saying... how do i exactly configure my kernel (what codes or what configuration) to build the sound card support as a module...

thxxxx.....
