Hello, IMO the font here is too small and straining on the eyes.

I know I can magnify with browser, but the default here is just - tiny.

I like e.g. the fontsize at https://forum.xfce.org/ (perhap they have newer phpBB? i do not know...)

According to my browser's inspector, your link is 15px tall, has a font-size of 12px, a line-height of 18px, and font-family of Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif.

The linked page has a link that is 17px tall, has a font-size of 13px, a line-height of 17px (yes, shorter), and a font-family of sans-serif,Verdana,Arial,Helvetica.

Thus, yes, they use a slightly bigger font.

The one pixel makes for quite a big difference, really (namely when editing a post).

I think there is also a question whether your browser respects the fonts that the site requests

Well the font I see is on both pages is Liberation Sans (which respect the "sans-serif" font in css), so I am comparing apples to apples. I have not installed extra fonts, I guess many people are seeing the page as I am.

For textarea (writing, editing posts), forum.xfce.org uses 1em size, which translates to 12.8px. It is opposed to mere 11px here on gentoo.

Also, .postdetails here are just 10px - they are 1em (12.8px) at the other site.

Ctrl+Shift++
AFAIR, firefox remembers the magnification by site, so it's persistent.

Or ctrl+mousewheel. I know that, as I have written. But how many people knows that and/or find this information? I think the default ought to be changed.

The defaults here are pretty bad, yes. It's only readable at all because most people's systems fake a font for Verdana/Arial; X11 Helvetica is a horrible eyesore.

It's going to be fixed “soon”, or so we're told.

Browser extension - https://nosquint.en.uptodown.com/windows
I'm watching right now at 110%, some sites require 120% and even 130%
I have cataracts and am far-sighted.

EDIT:
If it matters my default font is Arial 16. Yes, I've installed Arial on Gentoo but I think it may be a legal thicket.

Yes, font is really small.
Luckily, it's better with browser zoom and it remembers the size, but still it's not perfect.
Besides, this is the only site where I had to use that feature in Firefox
