Hi there,
I am totally lost after having done some updates...
I did upgrade gcc to 8.3.0-r1 on all of my machines (a few x64 machines and a few more arm machines, most of them being raspi3b's), which seemed to be a good idea, as this is stable on all architectures for quite some time now.
But crossdev insists in installing 8.2.0-r6. When I try to install cross-armv7a-unknown-linux-gnueabihf/gcc-8.3.0-r1 it complains loudly:

*) The first thing, which puzzles me: where the hell gcc-8.3.0-r1 is masked? On the Gentoo packages site this version is labelled as stable for all architectures...
*) The second one: would it be save, to unmask it (why ever this was required) and then select 8.3.0 by gcc-config? Would the cross toolchain still be consistent after upgrading gcc and possibly unmerging the old gcc.
I have no declared preference for a certain gcc version. I just want to have the same version throughout all my installations, e.g. in order to make distcc happy.

I've been using gcc-9 since a week after it hit the tree.
I suspect you have cross-armv7a-unknown-linux-gnueabihf/gcc-8.3.0-r1 masked locally as eix says the current stable is 8.3.0-r1.
Its probably not that exact version.
What does | Code: | | grep -r gcc /etc/portage/ |
tell?

crossdev itself is not tied to versions of anything.
When you run | Code: | | crossdev cross-armv7a-unknown-linux-gnueabihf |
It looks an the ebuilds you get from the crossdev overlay and either builds the latest stable or testing toolchain, depending on the -S option.
Once you have a cross toolchain installed, it gets updated as a part of your regular updates as long as you sync the crossdev overlay to get the new ebuilds. crossdev itself is then only needed for new cross toolchains.

Many package can build gcc need swap rust will fail somepackage need -j2 or -j1. pc qemu is other way
