Hi,
Any thoughts on gentoo as a web server in a production environment? I'm very familiar with Redhat and Ubuntu but have been tasked with looking after a couple of gentoo boxes.
Thanks. |

idixon,
Welcome to Gentoo.
It works but setting it up securely is up to you. All the Gentoo sites use it :)
Gentoo offers a selection of web servers too.
Code: | ls /usr/portage/www-servers/
adsf civetweb lighttpd nginx-unit servefile tornado
apache fnord Manifest.gz ocsigenserver sniproxy uwsgi
boa gatling metadata.xml pound spawn-fcgi varnish
bozohttpd gunicorn mongrel2 pshs thin xsp
caddy h2o monkeyd puma thttpd
cherokee hiawatha nginx resin tomcat |
The guidance you want depends on the server you have installed.
Quote: | ... tasked with looking after a couple of gentoo boxes. | sounds scary. How out of date are they?
What does Code: | cat /usr/portage/metadata/timestamp.chk | tell?
That's the date and time your ebuild repository was last updated so the entire install is older than that.
If you don't know how to maintain Gentoo, its nothing like a binary distro, do a Gentoo install to learn the ropes.
One thing you don't do is update a production system without building and testing in an offline system first. _________________ Regards,
