Hi there. Up to (and including) gentoo-sources-4.19.72 there are no suspicious messages concerning usb in /var/log/messages. Starting with gentoo-sources-4.19.82 I get the following message every four seconds:
Code:
kernel: usb usb4-port1: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?

I have tried
gentoo-sources-4.19.82
gentoo-sources-4.19.86
gentoo-sources-5.4.0
and all of them produce the message while 4.19.72 and older do not.

Config for 4.19.72 and 4.19.86 are identical (except for some new options in 4.19.86).

Anybody got an idea what that could be? There are no external usb devices plugged in.

Not having the message doesn't mean the port is working with an older kernel, just that older kernel didn't warn you about that.
It might be it just doesn't work, and you don't use it, making yourself unaware of its condition until newer kernel add a message to warn about that condition.

Hm, good point. The USB3 port is a bit picky about the devices plugged in. Sometimes they show up, sometimes they do not.

Does the message
Code:
kernel: usb usb4-port1: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?

refer to
Code:
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub

?

This port is non-essential for me. Can I suppress the message? I would prefer it not flooding the logs ...

Can you confirm weather this picky port is the port flooding your logs or not? Either way it feels like a hardware issue to me but it may be caused by something else. If your USB ports are working correctly once you plug something into them, it should show up almost immediately and dmesg should confirm this. Is your system a laptop or desktop and if a desktop what motherboard? Dose dmesg offer any additional information?

I'd say yes. It appears to be port 1 on hub 4. My dmesg output when then kernel is loading my bus devices.
Code:

I'd say no unless there is some additional debugging or monitoring options you could disable in the kernel. I'd suggest running the 4.19.72 kernel until you can isolate the problem.

Best Tango
