I have just finish installing gentoo, im using xfree4.3.0-r3 and nvidias graphic drivers and development-sources2.6test11, but when I try to start X, it crash, and it says "No screen found", now im using the nv driver, without any problem, but the nvidia drives have much better performances. i think you didn't complete all the instalation procedures, you should refer to nvidias' web site and check the install documentation.
