Attempting a fresh install of gentoo on a new latop and am following the installation handbook.

The handbook gives a big red warning about ensuring that the profile version you select matches the stage3 tarball you downloaded - however it does not say how you are supposed to determine the profile version of the stage 3 tarball. I have a selection of 17.0 and 17.1 profiles to choose from. The downloaded filename and the download page give no indication as to the profile version of the downloads available.

How do I determine the profile version of the downloaded stage 3 tarball ?

On the tarball itself:
Code:
tar -tvf stage3-amd64-20180918T214502Z.tar.xz | grep ' \./etc/portage/make\.profile'
or inside the chroot during the install (if you haven't already changed it):
Code:
eselect profile show

Thanks for that John,

I'll have a hunt around as to how to suggest an update for the handbook as it seems like it should be a no brainer to add to the red warning box (and I doubt I qualify for messing with the handbook directly)

Hi cabalist,

I forgot to say before, welcome to Gentoo! :)

Right from the Handbook Main Page, see the notes under the heading How do I improve the Handbook? For later on, if you find a problem with a Gentoo package, see the Bug report guide.
