Whenever I try to login as a normal user, the xdm manager just kicks me back to the graphical login screen. I didn't see anything suspicious in the XFree logs, but take a gander at the /var/logs/xdm.log below:

The last thing I did before this was trying to get the screen saver to work for non-root users. So I suspect I goobered up the rights on somethng. Any suggestions?

Hm, the relevant portions seem to be
Code:

Using vt 7
sessions: SessionTypes=Xsession,
Changing kdmrc in /usr/kde/*
/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0: line 25: cd: /usr/kde/*/share/config/kdm: No such file or directory
Changing kdmrc in /usr
/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0: line 25: cd: /usr/share/config/kdm: No such file or directory
xdm error (pid 1487): Server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly: 0

The corresponding lines in my kdm log are:
Code:

Using vt 7
/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0: line 7: /usr/kde/3.1/bin/kdmdesktop: No such file or directory
sessions: SessionTypes=Gnome,Xsession,fluxbox,kde-3.1.4,
Changing kdmrc in /usr/kde/3.1
Changing kdmrc in /usr
/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0: line 25: cd: /usr/share/config/kdm: No such file or directory
Changing kdmrc in /usr/kde/3.1

Looks like your configuration is botched - Xsetup_0 doesn't see anything but the basic Xsession in /etc/X11/Sessions, and it doesn't get a valid value for the $KDEDIR variable. KDEDIR comes from /etc/env.d/56kdedir-3.1.4 in my case. Maybe a permission problem on /etc, /etc/X11 or /etc/X11/Sessions?
If there's only a Xsession file in /etc/X11/Sessions (no kde-3.1.4 file), you might want to retry emerging kdebase.
Until then, a quick fix seems to be changing your DISPLAYMANAGER variable in /etc/rc.conf from "kdm" to "xdm" - that will at least give you the basic X with the twm window manager and some terminals open.
If you change anything in /etc/env.d, don't forget to run env-update right afterwards and then either running "source /etc/profile.env" or closing the shell and opening another one.
If this didn't help anything do tell.

Edit: Forgot the last two words in the post :P

FInal entry on this problem ... I played with it until root couldn't login, then I rebuilt the entire system. End of story. But I'm over it and things are running good. I suspect the logging into gdm as root may have been the cause. From now on I anly SU.

I am having the same problem, where only root can log in. I had not ever logged in as root until reading this post though. It happened before then. I have never installed KDE, and have always used GDM. This happened between the last two emerge updates I ran. Im not sure exactly what caused it because i had not restarted X until i had to because a switch to vc1 goobered up the screen and i had to '/etc/init.d/xdm restart' from vc1. (btw, this is another problem i have, that has not gone away, and whenever i remember, i just dont use vc1-6)

here is my entire xdm.log:

Ok, So to rule out the possiblity that it might be because i dont have kdebase installed, i went ahead and installed it so that the KDE files mentioned in errors in xdm.log. I am still having the same problem.

It is also worth noting that yes, i can log in with root, but for some reason, as soon as i run xoowriter, it crashes back tothe gdm screen. In case it was a result of the fonts, i checked the xorg.conf to see if i should take the font listing out. Turns out, that the xorg.conf listed font directories that it is complaining about,

Code:
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list!

These font directories are there regardless, though, the actual listing in xorg.conf lists them as:

Code:
    FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/local/"
...
    FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/Speedo/"

the fglrx is another odd issue, because ive not recompiled the kernel, and it gives me the same error for when i successfully log in as root.

to eliminate gdm as thecause, i tried xdm and had the same results.

I think that the root of the problem has somethign to do withthe following errors from xdm.log, but am not sure what to make of them in light of having just installed kdebase.

Code:

AUDIT: Mon Sep 13 00:09:45 2004: 7528 X: client 2 rejected from local host
AUDIT: Mon Sep 13 00:09:45 2[code]004: 7528 X: client 4 rejected from local host

sessions: SessionTypes=Gnome,Xsession,

/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0: line 25: cd: /usr/kde/*/share/config/kdm: No such file or directory
Changing kdmrc in /usr
/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0: line 25: cd: /usr/share/config/kdm: No such file or directory

This problem really has me stumped. Any suggestions?

sorry for my remark in german, but i mixed this topic up with a similar one i've just posted in the german subforum...

i had a similar problem, using nome gdm and xorg, since i changed my CFLAGS
from march=pentium4 to march=prescott (pentium4 with so called sse3) since i read about this possibility in the gcc 3.4 online doc and i certainly have such a processor.
the strange thing is this:

when i recompile xorg-x11 with march=pentium4 (the only ebuild compiled this way!)
everything seems to work.

if i change the flaggs again,
the ebuild does not crash, but as you described earlier, i'm kicked just after logging in everytime..

try to change your cflaggs!!

Well,
I just finished a compile with modified CCFLAGs, and no avail. I basically switched them up so that i got rid of some of the optimizations that are known to cause problems occaisionally. I even did an emerge sync and update world. no help. I have recompiled againwith the old flags after doing the update so that everything was back to the way it was before. But so far, no luck.

Does seem that i can stay logged in as root for quite some time, and not get kicked out until i run open office. I am wondering if it still has somethign to do with the fonts, or if there is some issue with graphics rendering or such.. maybe OpenGL or something along those lines that isnt used until then?

...

RATS! It is something to do with OpenGL for sure. I just ran the fgl_glxgears program and it immediately crashed on me. I will have to look for OpenGL problems in other threads.

Any suggestions are still welcome.

Alright, methinks there is something screwy going on beyond the OpenGL.

I will be recompiling a new kernel with the stuff i need again, but just for shits and giggles, i created a new test user which had no OpenGL stuff turned on by default, and at the same time, used the 'Gnome Failsafe' login session.

Same problem. Logged out immediately.
there are no OpenGL apps that would be loading.

But for root, i can log in and stay logged in until i run an OpenGL app.

SO it is starting to look like some sort of odd authentication /OpenGL problem... probably two problems working together to give me a runaround.

If anyone with a better knowledge of how this part of the system works sees this, please help!

I had this exact same problem and I ignored the posts that told me to delete my config directories .gnome, etc. I tried once to move my home directory to a temp location and create an empty new home directory but it didn't work. After trying other things, I eventually put my original home directory back and deleted something like .g* , .x* , and .X* and that did the trick.

I had this exact same problem right down to the opengl thing. I thought it was the opengl thing since I read this thread but it finally worked after deleting everything. I wish I had done it one file at a time so I could pinpoint the problem a little better.

Hey Ya'll-
Just had to let ya know, that my X is working again. Just started working again after the last
Code:
emerge sync && emerge -uav world
that i did.

So apparently, something in the xorg updates that came across fixed it. Perhaps it negated the problem with whatever file was there in the home directory.

If anyone is still having this problem, It would be very cool if you could delete the files one at a time as suggested to help us pinpoint the problem.

I was experiencing the same problem. I looked through the files and the one that seemed most relavent was .Xauthority, so I deleted it. It was a lucky guess because GDM logged in my user with no problems after that. Hope this helps some future-frustrated users.

<--- this frustrated user did not solve this by removing .Xauthority
however I am looking at some hints about /etc/pam.d/xdm
