I'm running alsa and pulse audio. Pulse has always been a pain in the neck for me, it crashes regularly (once a day at least) and I have to pulseaudio -k to get it to come back.

However, today's update has made audio garbled. Hissy. like a few of the middle bits are getting swapped.

It's terrible.

My hardware is a gigabyte motherboard with Ryzen 5 1600, Nvidia GTX 1050ti, and a yamaha receive and LG TV running in 4K.

I don't know what packages updated, but I'm about to look at the log.

There doesn't seem to be anything in the dmesg that indicates problems. Alsa complains that it can't find audio cards, but then finds the realtech anyway. I'm not using it. everything is going out through HDMI.

I found a thread talking about noise on the audio that was related to memory encryption. I turned it off on the kernel command line and it made no difference.

How do I debug something like this?

Update: I have an old laptop that uses HDMI for audio and it's borked as well.

Final Update: gentoo-sources-5.4.5 broke HDMI audio. Looks like a kernel bug.

Just in case you missed it, it's easy to patch:

Update: and fixed in 5.4.6.
