You're right, I just tried it and that setting in rxvt didn't matter.
Also, there are no other settings in rxvt regarding this.
I remember I had this problem long time ago, but actually the problem was in the window manager, in dwm this is solved in dwm config by this :
Code: | static const int resizehints = 0; /* 1 means respect size hints in tiled resizals */ |
So, you might want to check your WM and find similar thing if it's configurable.
Currently I'm using dwm and rxvt and smart resizing workfs fine.
That's my understanding, I could be wrong though |

Tested working but with scrollbar issue.
So it should be fine for those not using scrollbar.
EDIT: Tested method is the first, e.g. using LD_PRELOAD method.

Scroll bar is back in place when moving the terminal window, using each of the above reported methods.
So it might be possible to patch urxvt.

Tested alternate to x11-misc/urxvt-font-size, suffering the same scrollbar issue though.
size: 4505 vs 15233
