|
|
Hello,
Since Gentoo + GNOME without OpenRC is available, i would like if there are a lot of people which uses GNOME on OpenRC.
I start this poll to know about Usages of Desktop Environment on Gentoo !
Thanks for all ! _________________ Desktop : MSI Gaming Pro X470 - AMD Ryzen 5 2600X - RX 560 - OpenRC GNOME - gentoo-sources-6.1 LTS
Server : Acer Barebone - Intel i3-8100T - OpenRC CLI - gentoo-sources-5.4 LTS
VMs : A lot of VMS to practice Gentoo of course (proxmox, virtualbox) |

I prefer using the i3 window manager, but I also like the KDE Plasma desktop environment. |

I use bspwm. I would never use Gentoo with KDE or GNOME, Firefox + LO is more than enough for me. |

That's fine, as long as you don't pretend to 'know' how 'big' it is to build. |

Using XFCE with OpenRC for the most part. But out of curiosity i've just set up Gnome with systemd on a testing computer and i am mostly surprised about evolution. The handling of Caldav / Carddav and Email is really good and something i am missing on XFCE. |

While I use xfce4+openrc I barely feel like I'm using it as a DE. Only xfce4 packages I have installed is xfwm4+terminal+panel+embed-plugin+dependencies (no thunar, no sessions, not even xfdesktop since I don't use desktop icons and just use feh to set the background).
I do like that xfce4 let me get rid of bigger unwanted components while it'd be a headache with many other DEs. I may move away from xfce4 and go for a more independent window manager eventually, but can't be bothered to change a few things right now |

I did use gentoo with kde... never again. It added loads and loads of packages I never really used. Recently switched to i3-gaps and I'm quite liking it.
Still some things to do, though. Like considering whether polybar is a good idea or not (i3status does its job) and installing rofi. |

Whenever I read something like that, I'm wondering if they actually really use Gentoo how it is supposed to be. It is like complaining about the huge size of a supermarket, even though you can have your stuff hand-picked and delivered at the reception. |

openbox, picom, tint2, xbindkeys, rofi. Gives me 90% of a DE at 5% the weight. |

OpenRC, sddm, and icewm. Starting to think about wayland, can someone comment about a lightweight compositor, somewhat icewm-like? _________________ .sigs waste space and bandwidth |

Windowmaker. Ultra-responsive, ultra-reliable, ridiculously easy to configure the way I want it and uses next to nothing by way of system resources whilst remaining aesthetically pleasing. |

I use i3-gaps. Used to use KDE + openRC, but it was too slow on my laptop. |

KDE + Openrc
though KDE I essentially use as a window manager, not much beyond few workspaces and panel with few widgets below. Don't use icons on desktop surface,
any pim packages. |

I suspect many people form the same opinion after installing all the KDE meta packages to build everything. But you don't have to; unlike most binary distributions, Gentoo lets you be more specific. Here's the complete list of KDE packages in my laptop's world file:
Code: | kde-apps/ark
kde-apps/kaddressbook
kde-apps/kcalc
kde-apps/kcharselect
kde-apps/kdebase-meta
kde-apps/kdepim-addons
kde-apps/kgpg
kde-apps/khelpcenter
kde-apps/kleopatra
kde-apps/kmail
kde-apps/kmix
kde-apps/kontact
kde-apps/korganizer
kde-apps/kwalletmanager
kde-apps/kwalletmanager:5
kde-apps/okular
kde-misc/kdiff3
kde-misc/kdirstat
kde-plasma/kdeplasma-addons
kde-plasma/plasma-meta
kde-plasma/powerdevil
|
My chosen extra meta packages add several items, but the total is still far smaller than a default setup with all of the meta packages.
Of course, you can still justifiably complain that the split into Qt, kde-frameworks, plasma and apps has just added layers for no apparent benefit. Maybe it's time for a KDE6 built straight on top of Qt _________________ Greybeard |

bspwm for me, KDE is nice, but I tend to overwhelm myself with options when playing with that DE. _________________ Pura Vida |

Funnily enough, www-client/firefox takes about as long, if not longer, for me to compile than my entire KDE stack (which, to be fair, is a relatively minimal KDE installation). Basically just kde-plasma/plasma-meta with a handful of KDE apps. Firefox is typically 1.5-2.5 hours depending on what else I have going on, but KDE will typically be done in less than two hours.
That's 1 package vs. ~124 packages for KDE.'course, the reason Firefox takes as long as it does is due to enabling the pgo USE flag. I probably should just use firefox-bin, but oh well. |

Personally I do patch firefox for things I don't like and use jack as well... |
