This is not "Live" ...
"LRS" keeps the word "Live" ... but I turned it into something different.

Image is writable as a regular system .
It doesn't work to RAM.

You can update,install/uninstall everything ...
Add users ..everything ... You can customize LRS as a Gentoo system

PS : my goal is to have backup/restore tools and other useful tools updated and ready to use

That's a really bad idea. Especially since your documentation encourages people to create a user account with a password on a "recovery" system people expect to be a "Live" USB. Dangerous.

I haven't tried the new ISO with Rufus yet but hopefully it will be read-only when I do it that way.

Again ...Never wrote "LiveUSB" or something else..
All images are not "Live".
"ISO" is a container of *.img filesystem It's not a ISO-9660.
(Build for Rufus that I can't test)

LRS (as SystemRescueCD do) run with root privileges.
If you want use LRS for your daily work , it's raccomended to create a regular user as Gentoo wiki explained and restore /etc/inittab

Quote:
=== About ROOT user ===
=================================================================================="
LRS run with ROOT privileges , please pay close attention !!! "
For daily use, creating an underprivileged user is highly recommended .
[ https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Finalizing ]"

Root autologin is invoked by /etc/inittab
# mv /etc/inittab.gentoo /etc/inittab

to reset as default gentoo inittab then create a regular user as explained
to the wiki.

Taking a look at the ISO file, there's only 3 img files in there. There's no way that will boot when there's no system provided to mount the img files.
If you're going to do it this weird way you might want to stop releasing ISOs and avoid confusion.
(This is already confusing, unless you're old enough to remember floppy disks you probably never heard of a raw image.)

I think if you're going to provide something to the public which calls itself an ISO but is instead an archive with 3 files only you know how to mount properly, you shouldn't provide an ISO at all. It's less confusing to people who would download a "Linux Live Recovery System ISO" and assume that if it walks like a duck, it is.

Also, you need to make it clear to users in the documentation that this is not normal live recovery media, but a persistent hard drive, and that anything saved during the session (including user accounts, WiFi passwords, and browser cache) will be permanently stored on the USB. Perhaps a good place for this would be right above or below the recommendation that you create a normal user account, and preferably let people know this clearly in the opening message of the thread.

Thanks for your feedbacks.

Next update:
Quote:
=== INTRO ===

This is my own project to replace SystemRescucecd ISO image. Just for fun.
Anyone can do this.

LRS raw image is bootable on BIOS/UEFI systems running Grub2
It is based on Gentoo AMD64 no-multilib. It was build from stage3

LRS raw image can be installed on any USB/HDD device.

USB/HDD Min size required : >=8 GB (8GB should be tiny , depends on USB chipset)

== About Users data ==
* You can install and update LRS system just like a Gentoo installation.
LRS is persistence. All your data will be stored on the device
included passwords , WiFi passwords , accounts and browser cache etc.
and all system changes will be preserved.

=== Wipe all user data ===
* All user data can be safely deleted running /usr/local/sbin/wipe_users_data.sh
This script going to wipe all users data and fill with zeros all free space.

=== About ROOT user ===
=================================================================================="
LRS run with ROOT privileges , please pay close attention !!! "
For daily use, creating an underprivileged user is highly recommended .
[ https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Finalizing ]"

# mv /etc/inittab.gentoo /etc/inittab

I wasn't able to mount the iso!

extracted it thus:
Code:

$ zstd -d -v -c 20200108-2210-LRS.iso.zst -o 20200108-2210-LRS.iso
*** zstd command line interface 64-bits v1.3.7, by Yann Collet ***
20200108-2210-LRS.iso.zst: 8074035200 bytes

and attempted to mount thus:
Code:
# sudo mount -t iso9660 -o loop 20200108-2210-LRS.iso /mnt/cdrom

mount: /mnt/cdrom: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.

Sorry sabyonino, this is too complex for this n00b! :roll:

I go back to the previous downloaded iso LRS-201908-13 for the rescue USB.

As I wrote in my previous posts , ISO is not a ISO-9660standard. Built to test with rufus or similar apps that I can't test.

I didn't even plan to release an ISO

ISO was dropped from my DropBox

LRS is a persistent raw image that you can install on USB/HDD from stdout to device. stop.

I wrote some INFO (LRS.info file) how I built LRS.

Nothing to do with a Live ISO that you know
(something like Raspeberry PI images)

Why you're cloning VDI ?
Make new VM-Machine and select VDI image as new harddrive (not create a new VB disk)

[edit]
You must decompress .zst archive first. Your command is wrong (you're trying to compress the zstd archive again ).
Code:
zstd -d <file>.zst -o <your-name>.vdi

or simply
Code:
zstd -d <image.vdi>.zst

Code:
man zstd
-d, --decompress, --uncompress

Thanks, never used that decompression program before.
Regarding cloning, just testing, and didn't want to write to 'virgin' image until I was comfortable. Upon reflection, the compressed file remains pristine, so it was a waste of time but it did highlight my screw up decompressing.

-k option to keep *.zst archive
Code:
zstd -k -d <file>.zst

See other zstd options
Code:
 man zstd

Just a note that you should not attempt to use gparted on the LRS jump drive. When you start gparted, it proceeds to correct a "partition table error" which reduces the maximum size of the jump drive to (IIRC) 50 MB. Don't remember what I did exactly to fix it, but I think I had to use the Windows 10 diskpart and/or gdisk (sys-apps/gptfdisk).

This happens 'cause Gparted detect LRS device has more than 7.7GB (7.7 GB LRS image size) unused/unformtted free space. (example if you have "burned" LRS image on >=8GB USB/HDD device)
Just ignore the message or simply resize the LRS filesystem ( see the first menu choice on TTY1) or just run
Code:
/usr/local/bin/lrs-resize.sh

On Daily image there is a ncurses/dialog menu on TTY1

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/1513/kG4ODn.png
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/7212/5NlRPA.png

I'm running LRS on 160GB SATA Disk (with USB adapter) and it works well
Some USB devices may be very bad I/O performances :| this could not depends on LRS system.

[edit] I choosed XFS as LRS filesystem 'cause it can be resize (It can be expanded only) on running system (called hot resize) .

Downloaded image and decompressed successfully :oops:
However, it exhibits similar behavior to my problematic VM, get the Grub startup selection then hangs immediately after. in my VM case, loading ramdisk.
I suspect something in my host system has gone haywire, which is Gentoo :) but the Windows 10 VM boots just fine...

It is somewhat annoying, given the VM is years old and worked fine up until recently.
Windows 7 and Windows 10 VMs both boot fine.

VM has its own story .
Make new config or try to disable 3D acceleration and PAE

Completely new config using same VDI, upped to 2 cores, 2G memory but all the rest of the settings are default.
Still no go. :(
Oh, but a new VM for the rescue image does boot.

A fix is coming

After consolekit replacement (elogind) , Xfce4 session for the root user may be broken

[FIX]
/root/.xinitrc
Code:
exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session xfce4-session

Default user (if created) no need .xinitrc file 'cause a login manager is enabled.

Sorry for the inconvenience :?
