Hi

it has been a while since I have played around with Gentoo so I am trying it out on a VM at present. I am following the current handbook and have got to 'Updating the @world set' in the base installation section. I have changed my profile to the generic desktop profile as below
Code:

   [16]  default/linux/amd64/17.1 (stable)
  [17]  default/linux/amd64/17.1/selinux (stable)
  [18]  default/linux/amd64/17.1/hardened (stable)
  [19]  default/linux/amd64/17.1/hardened/selinux (stable)
  [20]  default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop (stable) *
  [21]  default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/gnome (stable)
  [22]  default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/gnome/systemd (stable)
  [23]  default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/plasma (stable)

It is failing on spidermonkey with the below errors:
Code:

{standard input}: Assembler messages:
{standard input}:263444: Warning: end of file not at end of a line; newline inserted
{standard input}:264561: Error: unknown pseudo-op: `.qu'
x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-g++: fatal error: Killed signal terminated program cc1plus
compilation terminated.

Code:
x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-g++: fatal error: Killed signal terminated program cc1plus

Out of memory error, you should increase ram of your VM

As said above. But that aside, I see MAKEOPTS is unset for you but some build system use jobserver or similar by default if unspecified (not sure for spidermonkey but I wouldn't be surprised), so could try setting MAKEOPTS to a low -jX, possibly -j1. But if your host can afford, just give your VM more ram and instead use a higher -jX so testing goes quicker.

C++ on bigger packages can need an obscene amount of ram at times. Even worse if this was rust (3.5GB rss on a single rustc process always fun to see).

Thanks both, I am just retrying having increased my RAM to 4GB. Just out of interest how did you tell it is out of memory from the message below

It means something went out of its way to terminate it rather than just fail (like with kill), and it's a common occurrence for the kernel to do this if out of memory, plus your emerge --info is saying you only have 1GB(+1GB swap) so that makes it even more likely ;)

Have a look at the "dmesg" output and you'll likely have a line about this (if haven't rebooted the VM since anyway, but you can check if it happens again).

If you are planing to use https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Portage_TMPDIR_on_tmpfs please increase your RAM.

I think I'm having this problem, but I'm running on bare metal and can't add more RAM - perhaps I could add more swap, would that work?

You can add swap, but first I suggest first trying to run it with MAKEOPTS="-j1" so that it runs one job at a time. With less processes it will use less memory.
Code:
# MAKEOPTS="-j1" emerge -av dev-lang/spidermonkey

In fact I'm already doing this, my ancient machine has only one core to start with. Adding a swap file let the build complete.
