Using the 2-cd set of 1.4, I did a stage 3 + GRP install. Created a grub.config, using the kernel versions I wrote down after the compile. Then rebooted. I got the Grub splash screen and booted gentoo. I get this:

Booting 'Gentoo'

root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is extfs, partition type 0x83
kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-2.4.20-gentoo-r6 root=/dev/hda3
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1400, size=0x10b220]
initrd (hd0,0)/initrd-2.4.20-gentoo-r6

Error 15: File not found

Press any key tp continue . . . . [goes to Grub prompt]

Any thoughts?

mikel,

The file names referenced by grub.conf cannot be be found in /boot.

Check that you have (at least) the following files there
Quote:

kernel-2.4.20-gentoo-r6
initrd-2.4.20-gentoo-r6

The exact names are not important but htey must be identical in both places. The quote is from your post.
